Hi folks,

I live in the UK, am 45 and married with two teenage children.
I had never heard of Aspergers until my Wife saw a program on it and said that it was like them detailing my personality. I fit alot of the traits, and it would be nice if there was a reason behind me being such a social misfit !
What is the process or who do I contact regarding finding out more about diagnosis ? local doctor ?
Will this achieve anything in the long run ?
Did it help others who thought they were and were then diagnosed ?
I am not severe but did score 33 on the AQ test which I guess is borderline.

Thanks
Stu

Hey.
I think you should get a diagnosis just so you don't have the doubt.
Welcome to WP.

Hello and welcome to WP!

The question of whether or not to seek a formal diagnosis is one which is often discussed , so you are not alone. You might like to try using the WP search for diagnosis - you'll find lots of threads on the subject. And you can start a new topic in the General Autism Discussion forum to ask directly for advice and opinions.

Hi Stu! Welcome to Wrong Planet! Check out the many interesting and helpful forums here. See a psych doc who specializes in Autism/Asperger's spectrum disorders for a diagnosis. Take a copy of your online test with you, along with any notes of non normal type issues you have, that you think may indicate you are on the spectrum.

And remember, you are among friends here at WP! :D

Welcome. It's interesting you're married with two kids and still consider yourself a misfit. You wouldn't think they go hand in hand. Maybe I could learn something from this.

Welcome to WP Camo. Hope you like it here.

I see that you're a UK native? Well, join on in then. :)

And, yes, I'd go the local GP route first and foremost but it probably will help if you have a decent relationship with your doctor to begin with.

Wow, what a forum, so much to read, I am fascinated by all the similarities that we all share to some degree... Its true, we really are not alone !

I have booked a slot with my doctor on monday with a view to get referred for diagnosis, which has now made me start to doubt my symptons... Am I a faker ?

Then I have a quick re cap and realise I do without a shadow of a doubt ... argghh,..

So the journey begins.

I think this may be down to me thinking I was just incredibly shy and have forced myself to combat that 'shyness' and do all the normal things... It back fired many times..

Everything now makes sense and I feel almost elated that its not my fault that I just don't fit in....

Saw the Doctor this morning, was quite hard actually saying the words out loud for the first time but she will be referring me for a chat with a shrink type, not an assessment at this stage.
The doctor was clearly leaning toward social phobia, which I get as outwardly I do seem fairly NT.

Update:

I had my 45 minute phone call from the local mental health department this morning, which is the first step apparently, the doctor will now go away with my answers and discuss me with her colleagues with regard as to what to do next.
It felt very uncomfortable even on the phone talking openly about myself as I have never done this before..... quite unnerving to be honest.
I should hear in a week or two what the next stage is but I did stress that my main goal was to be assessed for Aspergers.
