I registered on Wrong Planet a couple of months ago, but the only thing that I have done before now is read the articles. I'm 35, and was recently advised not to pursue a diagnosis due to insurance purposes. I have an amazing NT sister who's 15 months older than me and has really helped me to understand much of the NT world (i.e.-explaining that NT's think that people who don't look them in the eye are trying to hide something). She is a great blessing in my life. Even though I think that I can cope with the NT world pretty well, I was REALLY excited when I learned of this site since it presents information on many of the issues that I've dealt with in my life. It makes me feel like I'm not alone, which is wonderful. I'm really looking forward to communicating with other members of the community, and am hoping to get to know at least a d few others here :-).

Right. With a known diagnosis like autism you'd be moving yourself from the insurable category to the pre-existing condition category. At 35, your state's guaranteed health insurance plan would probably cost like $700/month. For me, at 49, it's 934/month. There ain't no way I could afford that. I do have another condition which makes me ineligible for normal insurance so the autism bit wouldn't matter. Anyway, welcome to WP.

Wow, that's expensive! Glad I didn't go for a diagnosis.

Perhaps the issue is that health insurance is vanishingly unlikely to cover the cost of the evaluation? I know mine didn't, and that makes sense in terms of no demonstrable reduction in health care costs of the individual by diagnosis and "treatment."

Hi MatildaQ! Welcome to Wrong Planet! Check out the many interesting and helpful forums here. Go into the General Autism forum here. There is at least one post article there with links to online tests for Autism/Asperger's disorders. Take the tests, and save the results in a file. You can print out a copy for your records, and if you ever do go for an evaluation, bring a copy of your test results with you. Also, if you ever go for an evaluation, make sure the psych doc has experience with Autism spectrum disorders. Not all psych docs do.

You are among friends here at WP! :D

P.S. Thanks RedRobin62 fort he heads up on the insurance angle. I am on Medicaid for other health issues, so it doesn't really apply to me, but there are others here who will benefit from the info.
