Hi Everyone, Im Adam (chorus line "Hi Adam")
I was talking with a friend i have known all my life about my AS, and they just were not getting it, So i went to Wikipedia to try and help them understand and found this place.
I was 14 when i was diagnosed, after some kid punched me in the back of the head and i got into a fight with him, my school decided it was time to test me.
I resisted doing anything that would point out that i have it, even something like going to a site like this. For years i have just tried to be normal so that people wouldn't find out. I figured why would I want to be labeled by people who don't really know me as "that guy with autism". In fact it was so bad any time my sister told someone about it, i got rather upset and left. Most of the time people just forget I have it, even when they do know because i try so hard to just seem normal. I do it so well people look at my social awkwardness and just think Im unique.
I know from my studies of this, what we are suppose to be, but i have my days i look at it and go "is this REALLY me" I have read a lot of posts here, i discovered this at midnight and was up until 6 am reading and found, yes it REALLY is me.

Okay, first off, your sister should let you choose when, how, and whether to disclose to people. That is your personal choice.

Now, me personally, I have not had real good success disclosing to people that I self-diagnose on the Asperger's-Autism Spectrum. People seem to think that I'm crazy to even think that since I am 'obviously' not autistic. (I'm not sure what stereotypes they have in mind of who is 'obviously' autistic, but I suspect they are way behind the times.)

I am thinking of first introducing the idea that autism is a spectrum and all kinds of 'normal' people, high-functioning, and middle-functioning people are on the spectrum, too. I have even thought of a political slogan, "We are all middle-functioning!" One data point, with one professor, she doesn't really want to be friends with students or she doesn't have the time, which is fine. So my one trial I'm going to view as ambiguous.
