I have recently been diagnosed with Aspergers. Most of my life I have tried to avoid Doctors and Psychologists. At the end of last year i suffered a nervous breakdown. I finally thought that I had found a job that I could excel in. Working as a teacher in a high school. I had a really great relationship with the students. but the amount of lesson preparation involved overwhelmed me in the end.

I have a history of gaining employment and then losing it after a short while.

As my mother in law is a psychologist I have come to value her input so I decided to see a psychologist.

After hearing my life history and administering some tests I was diagnosed with Aspergers.

My friends and family are having trouble accepting my diagnosis. They see my diagnosis as an excuse not to try to fit into society any more. They also question whether my psychologist was too lenient in her diagnosis.

I have been a lurker on wrong planet for a while and it has been beneficial in helping me to accept my diagnosis.

I am sorry you are having a difficult time. I am in the process of trying for an official diagnosis - my trials with employment and family as well have hindered my process - so I hope you know you are not alone.

It isn't an excuse - it is answers to your lifelong unanswered questions. If your family can't see how liberating this is for you - then it is their problem. Continue your quest for answers and understanding yourself... It is your happiness in life here... not your families. I know it isn't easy - but keep your head up and know there are people out there that understand...

Glad you found Wrong Planet :)

Welome to WP

I also had to stop as a teacher (immigrant teacher). Mainly beacuse I could feel that it was to rough for my nerves, so when my psychiatrist said to me
that I should find something else, I stopped. She simply gave me the last push I needed in order to find something suitable for me.
Which dosen't involve teaching language to 15-20 students 8 hours a day

Now let's se what the job center want me to do. :)

:D Welcome!
Those around you will learn to understand and accomodate or they will lose you. I have a physical disability and it sure sorts out your family and friends and you learn who you can truly rely on. Once you have a diagnosis though (of anything) it is easier to make friends with people who have similar experience so it's a good thing really.
