I guess I should start out by saying that I'm a 19 year old male. I was born slightly autistic and had a noticeable speech impediment. My mom decided that diagnosing me with autism would have done more harm than good since I wasn't extreme, but did seek help with my speech problems.
Over the years, I was a very shy individual and distanced myself from people in general. I also had a fear of standing out in a crowd, which I believe is one of the reasons why I loved wearing plain clothes. I had odd mannerisms and I had a tendency to pace back and forth through my living room when I was excited or deep in thought. I also liked things like twisting my shirt into a knot, not sitting still, and having the tendency to take a simple unit of information and over-analyze it or daydream it into something else.
As I grew older, these mannerisms started fading. The excited hand movements and twisting shirts thing is gone, but many still remain, even if the effects of them are lessened. I'm very in tune with any environment that I am in, I like to observe people from a distance, even if I'm engaged in a conversation or activity with them.
Also, nowadays I'm very extroverted compared to how I used to be, and I actually like standing out somewhat in a crowd. Not too much, but the days of being a wallflower are long gone. I consider myself androgynous I have a wide array of masculine and feminine traits and characteristics. I don't how much of that is a result of my early autistic years, but I've read that there is somewhat of a connection.
Anyway, I didn't intend to turn this into a novel, but I wanted to introduce myself with a little back story for anyone who cares.
