Hello all. I was directed to your site after reading a book on Asperger's, I forget which one as there have been so many of them lately.

I'm the mother of an 8 year old boy who is currently undergoing the diagnostic process for Asperger's/ASD. I'm not sure if my son has Asperger's (and please someone correct me if this is the wrong way to say that, I'm so frightened of phrasing something the wrong way & upsetting someone). My son does seem to display so many traits of Asperger's/ASD, and my mum seems convinced that is the diagnosis he will get, but I can't help second guessing myself.

I've just come here really to reach out to people who may understand the difficulties we may face and the journey we are about to undertake and also because I am just trying to get an much information as I can, so I can help my son as much as possible.

Don't worry too much about it. Even if he gets that label, I promise you that he'll be fine. It's hard, yeah, but it's also not a death sentence. A neurologist once told my parents that I'd never make it through high school, and I'm halfway through a CS degree.

DO NOT allow the school to do the testing though--in most states, if you ask, they are required to pay for an independent neuropsych. Schools can and will hire the cheapest neuropsychologist they can, then skew test results so they don't have to provide services. This isn't to say all schools are awful (this is patently false), but you are your child's best advocate and one of the best things you can do for him is to have independent testing done.

Cheers!

May I also note that anyone that gets offended by a diagnostic label is being way freaking oversensitive. People need to understand that labels are something psychologists and neurologists use to treat your condition, and there is nothing wrong with them. There is no black and white of 'ASD and NT'. The disorder runs the gamet from mild sensory malfunction/social awareness issues that can just barely be labeled ASD or other related disorder (me) to a nonverbal kid who rocks back and forth (also ASD). Disorders run a spectrum. Nothing is black and white and everything needs to be treated on a case-by-case basis. A good doctor will know this.

So glad you popped by so to speak. Welcome. I would agree with most of the others. Would not worry too much on the diagnosis issue. If he is he is not be tossing around cliches. He will make you a proud Mama either way. If he is he will have some special gifts and eccentricities. They dont like a lot of loud yelling and stuff like that. lol.
