Hello! My name is Candid, and I'm new here to WrongPlanet.

After my mother heard some interview on NPR about Asperger's, she hasn't let up...she's be diagnosing me left and right. She's a retired teacher...not a doctor, by the way.

I just figured that I was different, or I was NORMAL and everyone else was a little strange.

Now that my son (whom I gave up for adoption - open adoption, so I still have contact with the parents once a year) is diagnosed with having Asperger's, I have decided to admit that it's ME that's different...and I probably have Asp. too.

How do you pronounce it without sounding like you're saying a dirty word, anyway?

Apparently, I'm a "textbook case". I always thought that it had something to do with my astrological sign (Cancer)...but after reading up on Asp, I guess there's more to it than being a moody Cancerian.

What's funny is, the adopted mother of my son had called me to ask if some of the things he was doing sounded familiar. I thought that EVERYTHING he was doing sounded familiar...which is why I don't think there's anything wrong with him. (I guess he hates homework. Yeah, that was always a problem for me, too! I could DO it if I WANTED, but I never wanted to because it was something that HAD to be done, rather than something that I CHOSE to do.)

Anyway, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only odd one out.

Candid

Thanks for the "Welcomes"!

Funny thing, I didn't really think anything was THAT "wrong" with me. I just figured that no one else "got it"...which was frustrating, but I accepted it and had moved on.

Now that I know I'm not the only one, my stinkin' brain won't let go of the idea. Ooooh. I have Asp...will this person KNOW I'm different? Will that person FEEL BAD if I say something or look at them in the wrong way?

Blech.

I suppose I was naive to think that nothing was really different about me....but now it's stuck in my head that I won't have "normal" relationships with people (since I haven't really had "normal" relationships with anyone...ever).

To Larsenjw92286 - Larsen is a GREAT name...except that I'm adopted....

To DerekD_Goldfish - open adoption probably isn't all that common...but more common now...from when I was adopted (TOO!) back in the '70's, it was a closed adoption. It all depends on the situation, I guess.

Also, I like calling it Asp. No matter how you space it out, it's still Asperger's....and I don't know about anyone else, but I can't help enunciatiing on the first syllable.

Jen

I am new to Wrong Planet, too. I just joined up yesterday too. I am here asking for help about my son, who is an Aspie, for sure, but not Dr. diagnosed. But like you, since I have found out about this, when I look back, I think both I and my husband were Aspies. We knew we were different, but we thought our different was much better. We thought we cared more about important stuff than other people did. Like our family. But I want to help our son who hasn't been lucky enough to find someone to marry and is now lonely and won't accept the idea of being an "Aspie" and relating to people with Aspergers. Do you have any advice for me?
