Hi from Queensland, considering formal diagnosis for AS
Hi, everyone. I'm 29, male and living in Queensland, Australia (although I'm originally from New Zealand ... like so many people here
).
I've was tentatively diagnosed with AS after multiple hospitalisations for suicidal depression in the last 13 months. I've always been painfully shy, and years of feeling socially isolated and anxious led me to succumb to desperation. I've been referred to a psychologist who specialises in ASD + depression + social anxiety. This was based on the identification of several particular idiosyncrasies: social isolation/awkwardness; high IQ; literal, verbose and non-expressive communication; intolerance for disruption of establish routines or incongruent behaviour (except my own, of course
) ... there are others that may or may not be relevant.
My psychologist seems to think there is a "strong chance" that I have Aspergers, but hasn't gone through a formal diagnosis with me yet. I'm weighing up whether or not to ask for one. I'll admit, I feel a bit selfish seeking a formal diagnosis – like I'm placing my self-worth in a label (based on seemingly subjective criteria), or giving myself an excuse to indulge my eccentricities instead of striving for self-improvement. But yet, after going on a couple of forums and reading the experiences of people living with ASD, I feel like for the first time in my life I can actually relate to a group of people. After 29 years without such affirmation, I really would like to be "included" – even if it is via a label.
Any views on diagnosis as an adult (pros and cons) would be appreciated.
Nice to meet you all, and I look forward to seeing everyone around.
