Hi there, just signed up and thought I'd drop by and say hello. :D
I'm 50, got diagnosed nearly 6 years ago now , I have ADHD Inattentive Type as a side issue so am pretty vague without a truck load of coffee and cigarettes to keep me focussed.
I've recently started on Ritalin and need less coffee and ciggies so I guess that might be a good thing in the long term, who knows I guess, bit like less of 2 evils kind of thing.

Anyway, glad I found the site as you all seem pretty awesome from what I've read so far.
A big warm Hello from me to you and hope to make some friends here even if it is only online.

Thanks for the welcome. :D

I actually found out my life long issue online too.
I scored off the charts on the self diagnosis so I knew what it was a long time before I actually went to to Psychiatrist for an official diagnosis.

Strangely enough, by via my diagnosis, my son and also 2 brothers now know what it is that they have to although none of them want it officially diagnosed as their attitude is that it could harm them in the future for future employment prospects, custody of children if a marriage goes belly up etc. I've tried to help them get past that to no avail, they just seem satisfied to know what the "family curse" is (as my brother puts it lol )...

So there is a lot of self diagnosing going on once one person gets it done.
I guess that's something at least rather than wandering around eternally with no clue at all..

Welcome ElunidIdol! When you received your diagnosis, did it come as a surprise?

Being diagnosed with ADHD-PI a few years back, I advocate the medication as something worth trying, especially because some symptoms are co-present in both ADHD/AS.

Hi...sorry it took a bit getting back to you. Just logged in now after first joining.

Actually I wasn't a surprise to me as I'd already self diagnosed via aspergers tests online.
I always knew there was something going on and I kind of managed up till my 40s but then I began to zone out more and my memory was really was getting worse to the point that I began to lose jobs. I knew there was something wrong, thought I had brain tumour or something.
I then got a referral from my local gp to a psychiatrist who was on a list I came across who has experience in Aspergers and then went to see him. It took a long time for the dx about 2 years.

But now that I know , I can now see that my son and also 4 sibs as well as my father are all Aspies. I'm the only one who has a dx though, the others think it might affect their employment etc so are satisfied that they might have it and don't need official confirmation.
