Gotta love it when you stumble into that corner of the internet that makes you say "hey, wait a minute....I'm NOT the only one!"

I've been lurking here for a few days, and decided it's time I join in on the fun. My name is Nathan, I was diagnosed with AS as a teenager and after several years of saying it was hocus-pocus shrink talk, I had a change in views and started embracing this awesome flavor of weird that's come to be who I am.

I have several obsessions rooted in a need for challenge and adventure - I enjoy cave diving, deep sea spearfishing, paintball, and a few other fringe activities. I'm definitely a "go getter", but also solitary and highly reflective - a firm believer in the "self made man". I believe in challenging the status quo and questioning underlying assumptions, which has led to a VERY interesting academic and professional career. Today I find myself in the happiest place I've ever been in life, living a very enriching life filled with positive challenges where my brain cells get put to use doing things that I absolutely love.

I signed up here to share my thoughts and interact with others like me. I'm a connoisseur of perspective, so to speak, and I absolutely love hearing the unique points of view that each one of us have.

Cheers!

I like the outdoors, too, but mostly just hiking. I'm more into the health benefits and beauty, less into adrenaline. I also like hot cocoa and am ecstatic that drinking two cups per day slowed down cognitive decline in folks beginning to show impairment. also improves blood flow to the parts of the brain dealing with memory. also lowers blood pressure a little. can you tell that my interest is medicine/healthy living?

Hiking is my gateway to a relaxing outdoors. As much as I enjoy the heart pumping aspects of nature, I'd be lost without my peaceful walks. I also spend a lot of time scuba diving without actually doing anything - I'll sit in one spot and watch the fish, crabs, and other sea life go about their business. I used to be a people-watcher until I started watching fish - they're much more interesting :D

I never knew those things about hot cocoa! Is there a particular brand or recipe that is better than others? I assume the healthy benefits don't apply to a cup of swiss-miss, or do they?

Hi loudzoo,

Welcome to WrongPlanet :)

We, the people on the Autistic Spectrum have a choice.
We can either try to "fit in" with the rest of society, or we can be so egocentric that we can't be bothered.
I choose the actor. I observe NT's. I listen to their socializing. I practice it, so in social situations I can just emulate/mimic what is expected.
It isn't natural for me, but it enables me to "fit in".
It is VERY tiring and draining, but at least we can appear like them even though it is an act. Like being on the stage.
They can't see it is emulation, and so we are accepted.
