Hello Everyone,

I finally got around to joining this site. I've seen posts on here but never joined until now. I was diagnosed in 2000 at the age of 17 with Aspergers Syndrome. My primary special interests are Science Fiction and fantasy. Especially Star Trek, Star Wars, cartoons and Doctor Who. I'm also obsessed with the little mermaid. What finally led me to join this forum is that I am going through another tough time right now and need support. I can only get so much support from my family cause I'm the only one that has Aspergers. I have some friends but they live an hour and a half away from me. I've always felt like an outsider most of my life, like I didn't fit in anywhere. Hopefully, I will feel like I belong here in this community.

Hi MermaidGirl83,

Welcome to WrongPlanet :)

We, the people on the Autistic Spectrum have a choice.
We can either try to "fit in" with the rest of society, or we can be so egocentric that we can't be bothered.
I choose the actor. I observe NT's. I listen to their socializing. I practice it, so in social situations I can just emulate/mimic what is expected.
It isn't natural for me, but it enables me to "fit in".
It is VERY tiring and draining, but at least we can appear like them even though it is an act. Like being on the stage.
They can't see it is emulation, and so we are accepted.

Seconded. I am amazed at the number of people DXd (or clearly have AS or a related condition) who express a feeling that they might not be welcome or might not belong; but given that lack of confidence is a common theme among many of us due to life's difficulties, I guess that's to be expected. Anyway, welcome to your planet :)
