Hello everyone.

Eight years ago I took a short vacation to go cycling in the mountains. Foul weather and a critical mechanical failure kept me indoors for two days with just a radio and some books for company. On the second the radio broadcast a one hour show on a mental illness with a weird name that seemed to affect a relevant number of children. That broadcast basically described my childhood and to a great extent explained why my adult life was becoming so eerie.

Once I arrived back in town I hit the web in search of more info on this mysterious illness. Most of it was dedicated to concerned parents, but there were also some tests. I took a few, always scoring over 15 in a scale from 0 to 20. The diagnosis seemed clear: I had Asperger's.

I kept reading and became ever more sure. Days later I decided to tell it to my best friend of the time and things went awfully wrong. At some point I stumbled upon a text on the web warning against telling others about the illness in adulthood; it also warned that even asking about it to your doctor could be counterproductive. I would never speak about it with any one else. In any case there was no such thing as a "cure" or a "treatment".

I moved on with my live, consisting mostly of lone activities. I have a day time job and am also a student, but even at the office I spend most of the time isolated.

Now and then I revisit this subject. The Massachusetts massacre lead me once again to this website last year, and this time I decided to register. I pondered on and off about starting to post and finally took a decision.

I am not certain if hanging out here can help in any way, nor am I really expecting anything. I just like writing, it can be a salutatory exercise at times.

Best.

That's a very interesting story, not least because I've found all kinds of random insights when my mountain bike rides go awry or farther than expected. Anyways, welcome, everyone else says to stay away from the dating subforum but I say you should just adopt a clinical view...

That is quite a story of how you got here. I'm pretty new here as well. I really hope, like me, you find kindred souls here on Wrong Planet. It sounds like it must have been really hard when things went wrong in telling your best friend. You sound like you could use some gentle treatment around you self-knowledge and you just might find it here.

Welcome to Wrong Planet.
