Hi Cat.
I sometimes think I am part dog. Grrrrr.... Bark! Bark, Bark Bark!

But do you know cats and dogs both desended from the same ancestor a few million years ago? That surprised me.

Fine, a big cat lover here. My only request is that you refrain from bringing live mice into the forum while I'm here as I have a bad back and find ejecting them problematic.

if you are a big cat lover, do you love cheetahs? they were domesticated 5000 years ago, some say they still make good pets. there is a good book about a pet cheetah called "duma."

Welcome Lilykitty!

Sounds intriguing... in an adult only kinda way! ;)

Toy Soldier.... 'But do you know cats and dogs both desended from the same ancestor a few million years ago? That surprised me.'

I once had a pet mink. Some well-meaning souls raided a mink farm near to where I lived in England, and liberated them all. Good for the mink maybe... not so good for the local wildlife.

Anyway, I spotted one in my garden one day and lured it with a hot, half baked meat pie I took from the oven. Wearing my thick leather gardening gloves I caught the lil fellah. It tamed easily and I was soon able to let it run free in my garden when I was at home and it would come into the house. All kinds of antics ensued. One day it was curious about the bath I'd just filled and walking along the edge by the wall, it lost it's balance and fell in. It hated it and was frantic to get out. Mink usually catch fish in the water but this lil felah had never seen a large area of water before and didn't like being in there one bit. Eventually I managed to get it accustomed then I was able to bath it (apparently even baby otters don't like the water the first time they encounter it... their parents have to encourage them for a while before they'll enter it).
It was very playful and affectionate and it displayed some of the characteristics of both dogs and cats. For example, in play it was just like a cat. When it was hungry and I had food, it would make little yelping noises just like a puppy. That's when I realised that the main carnivores are not that different after all and are actually quite closely related. Cats dogs, badgers, mink, bears... they're closer than I thought.

Well, that's it. I never quite know how to finish... lol

I wouldn't be surprised if it's more like 50 million years ago. I'll do some research.

According to "mainstream" sources, dogs and cats shared a common ancestor who was in the family Miacidae of the Order Carnivora.

Approximately 42 millions years ago, in the Eocene epoch, according to these sources, dogs and cats split off from this common ancestor; at that point, they were within the Caniformia and Felibformia familes respectively. It is stated that blatantly dog-like animals emerged around 40 millions ago, and cat-like animals 37 million years ago.

Apparently, a mammal known as "maelestes gobiensis," who lived late in the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era approximately 77 million years ago, is the common ancestor of dogs, cats, and humans.

You know I realized immediately after you said it, it had to be much longer ago like you said, but the dog, cat, human connection is new to me!

Fun choices; Borderlands is a lot of fun with a buddy. I've come to appreciate being able to play games with friends over strangers across the net. Been playing Black Ops Zombies quite a bit as of late. Dark Souls II is fun, but playing with a buddy is near impossible and the developers are sadistic. And if I could get my computer back, I'd love to get back into Hawken again.

so THAT's why us 3 kinds get along so well, for the most part.
