Hi, I'm Doggymama. I'm a 56 year-old Aspie and have been married to another Aspie for 32 years. We were both recently diagnosed with ASD (Asperger's syndrome). For years we struggled with deciphering each other's nonverbal cues without understanding why. We had many arguments threatening each other with divorce but always managed to make up. We knew divorce was not an option. We both have serious sensory issues and when one of us starts to melt down, the other partner will assume the adult roll and will calmly encourage the stressed-out partner to assume a calm state. We don't have kids due to our eccentricities. Instead, we have 7 dogs, 3 cats and a turtle. I would love to hear from any other Aspie/Aspie couples. Bye for now.

I'm a fan of the Richter Scale myself.

I also enjoy various types of architecture.

You must have some interesting marriage

While not a couple anymore, I was half of a couple where the other half very likely had (has) Asperger's Syndrome. Looking back from the point of view of knowing about my own AS, I see how it was especially difficult because of our differences in characteristics and severity levels. The good times were great, but the bad times were horrible. I would agree that Aspie couples with similar characteristics and severity levels should actually benefit from their relationship.

Do you see more similarities or differences in your relationship?

My AS is more severe than my husband's. He has worked at the same job for 27 years but my AS has made it nearly impossible for me to have any meaningful employment. We share the same geo-political views, tastes in music, and we like the same types of food. I think my husband is more intuitive, though, and is much better at dealing with NT's than I am.
