Hi. Nice site! I am new here. New to Asperger's. My name is Lori. I read a story by a woman with AS the other day, which inspired me to post my own story. I posted it on my website, and would like to put the link here in case anyone would like to read it. I am always searching for people like me. Maybe someone else is too... I have found some here. Thank you :)

Welcome LB!
I like your style.

I relate to everything you wrote, except the screaming part.

Welcome to WrongPlanet LB! You are far from unusual here. I related to a fair bit of your story myself - I have problems processing speech also, its fairly common among aspies. Hope you'll soon feel at home here! :D

Hi, I read your article and I could relate to everything except the thinking in pictures part. I think in words. I bet you would be a great computer programmer or software engineer because of your talents.

I identified with the screaming part. Have you ever been diagnosed with depression with psychotic features? That is my diagnosis, and it is a common one with Asperger's syndrome. I take Paxil (to ease the depression) and Abilify (to stop disorganized thinking and psychosis).

Begin shameless plug:
If you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth part of Texas, you might be interested in knowing that I've started an Asperger's Syndrome meetup group. We socialize (in our own way) and give each other support. If you don't live around my part of the country (or world) you can search meetup.com for other Asperger Syndrome groups.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the kind words and very welcoming welcome! I am completely overwhelmed to have found so many people like me in one week. I've gone 38 years without finding hardly anyone. I'm not sure what to even do with this information. 8O

It's the same with me. I rarely read my text books for my class becasue they just don't do a d#$@ thing for me!! !!

And when I do read them I find myself asking "what did I just read?" or the text on the page will start to dissolve and dance around and I'll have to stop reading, or risk getting a terrible migrane.

Me too. The exact same thing w/having no idea what i just read, and especially the words dissolving and dancing around on the page. I could never read text books when i was in school. Even now, I can only read some books, some times, usually fast moving fiction or computer manuals. I can't read newspapers at all, but sometimes magazines are ok.

Can you read for fun?

Have you looked into scotopic sensitivity syndrome?

http://www.irlen.com/sss_distortions.htm

I have trouble like this occasionally, but I don't think it's bad enough for me to need treatment. Usually it is only when I am really tired or become overloaded. Anyway, if you have trouble like this all the time, you should look into getting diagnosed and getting some type of irlen lens or overlays to help you with reading.

Thanks Civet :) That is very interesting. I never heard of it before. 2 pictures on that page ('seesaws' and 'swirl') are just like what i see when i can't read. There are some tips to help w/reading on the site too. Do you know if it is another 'aspie thing', or just a coincidence?

Hi Lori, I have found your story very interesting. Sorry to have missed it when you first posted it. I wonder why you would think that it was "completely jumbled and random"; it is quite an opposite in my opinion.

I can identify with some of your traits. I also hear a sound in my head, without a break and since I can remember. I wouldn't call it screaming, but rather a noise similar to one made by a radio tuned in between stations. It drives me crazy sometimes, especially when it unexpectedly becomes loud and high-pitched. Most of the time I try not to pay attention to it.

Like you, I am also quite forgetful in short-term, but I manage by making notes to myself, or routinizing my activities. When I go to another room for something, I often repeat in my mind what it was I wanted to fetch.

I also like what you said about "your world" being your home. Spending time in my "own world" (and stimming) is something that I like very much.

Hi magic :) Thanks for your reply. Up until last month, I was pretty convinced that I was very unique, and not always in a good way! Now I find that almost all of my "problems", oddities, quirks, etc. are very common in aspieland! It's caused me a bit of an identity crisis, but mostly, it is so nice to not feel so alone. I never thought that was a possibility.

The way you describe the sound in your head sounds very similar to the way I hear the screaming in mine. Do you think that it is another "aspie thing"? I have heard from one aspie woman who also hears screaming, and a whole bunch of people with similar sounding auditory stuff since I posted my story.
