New member here! I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was in elementary school and I always found it odd that they would call me up to meet with a social worker/personal instructor every month (didn't know what was going on) or so but now after thinking about all the symptoms I had (never making eye contact, hand flapping, rocking back and forth, intense interest in particular subjects, for me cars then astronomy) I guess it was understandable that it raised a big red flag with my teachers. They recommended a specialized education program for me but my parents refused so I went through elementary and HS with my "normal" classmates. Through my school years I was never too good at sports, though I excelled in sciences and math.

In high school, things gradually got better. I started interacting more with people, people were more accepting of social faults (at least in my HS), and I got along great with the group of friends that I had.

Then came university and I was thrown into a new environment with thousands of students I did not know and again my social awkwardness came to light. People said I had a problem with "tact" and that I didn't really seem comfortable with conversations, and I was isolated. Again, thankfully, I found a small group of friends who accepted who I was and I still hang out with them to this day. Didn't think much of ASDs at all.

Now, I'm done my first semester of med school and everyone in my class are pretty much more social/popular than I am. Academically I am doing fine though and they've been nice, but I'm again thrown back into my "uncomfortable" phase in a new environment and as a result made me think back to my awkwardness when I was in elementary school. I think I've had several awkward encounters with my new classmates too (shyness) which I think have resulted in them distancing away from me.

Nice to meet you all! Hope there are a few aspies in medicine as well :P

Welcome TOrCan, I do recognize the problems you describe and it is great that you are doing fine. Is there special support for people with ASD where you are? When I was attending school long ago there wasn't really anything for people with Asperger but now there are special classes/dorms and more...

Wow a doctor - that is great.
I think the world needs a few Aspy doctors because I think it is hard for Neurotypical doctors to really understand.
God bless you.

If you need anything or have questions, please ask away. I blab off a million questions and everyone is kind to help, even if I dont always like the answer.

Welcome to Wrong Planet! :) I think you'll find there are more than a few Aspies who work in the medical profession, so you're not alone. In fact there are some on WP.
