I have just signed up here today. I was doing research on AS and I think my nine year old son has As. He has been diagnosed with H.A.D.D., Bi-Polar, anxiety disorder,tics and a bladder problem. When I was reading some of the side effect of As that fit my son to a T. I have been trying to get the right diagnosis since he was four or five years old. I'm looking to interact with parents of AS children for some insight into helping my son. :heart:

Wellcome, I think you are at the right place.
Sounds bad all this diagnosis over a nine years old child, and, from my point of view we are usual people with some idiossincrasies, that, in fact, we like, at least some of them.
Well, anyway many of us like to be aspie and preffer to through away all this bizarre diagnosis.

I don't understand how they can diagnose a child with bipolar. From my understanding, bipolar develops in early adulthood. I believe the DSM IV even says that.

Some of the things that you have listed can be attributited to AS. I have begun reading a wonderful book that helps look at AS from a clinical point of view (but not so much that you can't understand it), and gives so much insight into AS that you might be able to notice more things that you didn't think of before. I have found numerous things that I didn't realize untill I started reading the book.
The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome by: Tony Attwood

There is alot of powerful information in that book. I can't expain somethings to other people so that they understand what I am saying, but have had them read a paragraph and then they understand.

I have a 7 year old Aspie and a 8 year old suspected (we've just started diagnostic process).

Do you have an asperger's specialist clinic in your area?

Also, if you go to the Parent's Forum you'll get lots of great advice.

Children are being diagnosed bipolar as young as 5 years old now. My guess would be that no one supected a child could be bipolar just as no one diagnosed adults with ADHD until recently because it was believed children grew out of it.
Where I live the are also pediatricians and child psychiatrists that specialize in autistic spectrum disorders. Are there any where you are? When I went in with my children I didn't ask what was wrong with them , I told the Dr.'s I thought they had Asperger's and made a list of all of their "quirks" and what the whole child is like (personlaity). That gave the Dr.s some direction and let them know that I knew what I was talking about.
I also read Tony Atwood's book and it is excellent!

Dear Jnet- trust me. Children can have bipolar. I finally recognized what weird thing was going on with my autistic child when she was nine and my mother described how my 60 year old aunt was just diagnosed with manic-depression (as it was known then) I had to persuade the child psychiatrist as he had never heard of it in children or in people with autism. Well, twenty years later we all know better. Anyway, he put her on lithium as a test, and we went from 9 crises a day to 1. For a while anyway. Now at age 29 we only have a few crises every few months when she is manic and clonazipan takes care of it when she goes nuts. The rest of the time she is a happy person.
