Hello. I'm new here, just signed up yesterday. I was explaining to a co-worker about Asperger Syndrome and he said 'hey, that sounds like me', so I went to look up the Wikipedia definition to send him a link to look at.
This site showed up on the page and I decided to come and take a look.
I am 32 years old, diagnosed with AS, and have a 10 year old son who also has AS (although he is now living with his father, and we both are working towards helping him adapt to life). Both my son and I were mis-diagnosed with ADHD at an early age, and for both of us, medication did nothing.
After we were diagnosed, we started a gluten-free, sugar-free diet and that seems to be helping us cope a bit better (that surprised me, actually).
I live in Pennsylvania, and work for an internet company in the DSL tech support department.
I am currently partnered to a wonderful woman who actually understands me, and we try to make things work although it gets frustrating at times.
I wasn't diagnosed until I started going to a therapist because I felt detached from everything and thought it was strange that when people around me were having problems at home or emotional issues, I just didn't GET it.
I've been seeing my therapist for about four months now, and she's helping me learn to recognize emotional cues from other people, but it's still frustrating and irritating at times because I have no real idea what's going on in most 'normal' people's heads.
I'm hoping that this place will let me learn a bit more, maybe help me adapt a bit better, and give me a place to just throw my hands up in the air when I get to the point where I just don't understand anymore.
