Hi, I am new here. I have an 11 year old son with a lot of struggles that have been getting worse and harder to manage. He has a therapist who specializes in ASD and said she didn't think he would totally qualify for the ASD diagnosis, but that his struggles are very similar to those on the spectrum, and treating them the same way would be most helpful.
In the past he has been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, ADHD and developmental trauma (due to adoption) but never on the spectrum. And I had asked. He was good with eye contact, physically affectionate (both giving and receiving), empathetic, outgoing, loved crowds, etc. But there were other issues that worried me. Now that he is older, the struggles are much more apparent.
Right now he is suspended from school pending a meeting to discuss behaviors, especially an outburst he had where he knocked over a table. He has had outbursts in the past, but never at school.
I am researching but its all so overwhelming. Some things fit, some don't. The big piece is social, because it has been getting harder for him to make friends as he is getting older. He has trouble understanding social cues (like if kids are laughing, he thinks they are laughing at him). He really struggles with physical boundaries (like touching people's faces). And has a very immature sense of humor.
Anyways, I am jumping all over. But I just want to help my boy. He is a great kid.
