My name is Belinda, and I come from Western Melbourne, Australia. I have had social issues since around the age of three and have basically never been given proper answers as to why I don't fit in socially and what it is that causes me to be....well, me.

At 6, I was sent to a government-funded group of, for the better part, trainee psychologists who told my parents that I had trouble fitting in because I couldn't cope with changes as they sent me in to panic, but nobody really made any connection and my parents ended up pulling me out of therapy completely as they ended up coming to the conclusion that these people were quite clueless. I refused to talk to the shrinks on all but three occasions during my therapy, as early in the piece they tested my reactions behind a one-way mirror and I very quickly realised that this was the case, and was unfuriated that everyone was deceiving me.

At 12, my family moved to the UK for two years, and I had awful trouble but eventually settled down after about a year. I was invited to Menza for an event for the young and gifted and found a lot in common with some of the people I met there, but never really got involved with Menza after that.

I feel like I have days where I am ok, I am fully motivated and function well, and other days where I seem to be stuck on the couch with a million little things in my head that I have to do and no motivation. This really upsets me. I excelled at biology in high school and also have fascinations with Quantum theories, psychology and animal behaviour. I have two dogs that I prefer the company of to most people.

I was in constant troulbe in school and always picked on, always the outcast. I once got in quite serious trouble when I was busted by a teacher out of school grounds and when disciplined for this, told him that the only reason he cared was because he would've been liable if something had happened to me. I thought I was justified, but I nearly got suspended for that one...

I am recently married to my partner of 6 years, and although he is very different from myself, he keeps me stable and we have a real connection. I really love him, despite his flaws, and he loves me despite mine. I have never really understood why this is.

A few months ago I was diagnosed with an anxeity disorder, after I lost my job due to what I would like to call work-related politics.... I have had constant trouble holding down a job, despite my capabilities to complete the task/s at hand and this infuriates and upsets me no end.

I also have a few isses with auto-immune disorders (I have spots on my stomach that won't go away and can't be effectively exlpained, go figure. They arrived around two years ago), as well as a few hormonal problems, well I guess that's what they are.

Anyway, in my own mind, I see mself as an "Aspie" as many of you have coined it, but I am curious of your opinions of me.

I'm 22 (just) now, and I think I have finally found the answers I have been searching for here.

Do your fascinations come and go like bursts of inspiration? A few days ago I was reading sociology journal articles on racism and prejudice like they were casual reading, but today I really don't have any interest to do so (though I probably will again sometime soon).

This seems like a textbook Theory of Mind case. Most wouldn't criticize an authority figure based on their understanding of social norms and emotional response, but it seemed like the most logical step to you.

It seems you are in a similar situation as I am, probably an Aspie but not really sure. Stick around and read/post to learn more about it, but don't lock into the diagnosis so much that you self-fullfill symptoms that you might not really have otherwise.

It sounds like you might have Asperger's. You might want to bring it up to a doctor or psychologist and see what they have to say about it.

Yes, that's it exactly. I will be totally engrossed in something, to the point where I won't even sleep in some cases, and then I will be over it. But what you said really hits it on the head, with the whole bursts of inspiration thing.

A few months back I got really engrossed in painting a picture, and it came out brilliantly, so I decided I wanted to paint some more. I lost interest by the time I started the next painting and it wasn't even a patch on the first one. I seem to get almost obsessed with a certain hobby and then drop it our of the blue. Although I've always loved my doggies, and I am definitely committed to my hubby.

Mum used to go crazy at me for never sticking to my hobbies as a kid.

Hello stranger!

Yes, you would seem to have AS, but don't take people's opinions to heart.

Welcome to WP!

Welcome, Belinda!

It sounds as though you have quite a few issues that may be related to AS, including social anxiety and immune system issues.

I too, prefer the company of my animals to that of most people. I like spending time with my cats and my dog.

I am interested in a wide range of topics, ranging from literature and history, to biology and medical issues. Other interests include cats, music, and the Olympic Games.

Please continue to post here.

Hi, Belinda! Welcome!

I almost voted yes in your poll, until I found out that you almost got punished in school. People with AS don't get punished, and all of them learning the hard way is not their fault!

I hope you enjoy posting here!

I must disagree. People with AS do get punished , just as I did, many times. I've been punished many times for either falling out with other pupils and saying offensive things. I was a problem kid in primary school, but I was quiet and angry later on. Kids with AS do get punished, some more so, for either being aggressive, not interacting with other children and teachers very well, and for many other reasons.

Hello, I hope you can find a job that exploits your strengths and doesn't require you to navigate office politics.

Belinda sounds like you've got off to a fabulous start in life Most of your 'problems' are strengths of course you haven't told us all the sad bits
I got punished and I wasn't a problem kid.
Be very cautious before you ask doctors or psychologists as very few know anything about ASCs.
Read everything by Donna Williams because she is an excellent authority on human functioning altogether and according to her everybody has got 'fruit salad'.
If it works, work it - glad to hear you, your hubby and your dogs are all clever enough to realise this.
Work should not involve politics & I hope there will be better work for you in future. Mine is almost at an end (perhaps) due to ill health, I am in my early 50s.
Ever such best wishes to you & yours,
(now off to try your 'poll')

I should have thought of including a poll like yours.
