I haven't had my coffee so sorry in advance for any errors.

I am 25. I only learned of my diagnosis two years ago. I was almost certainly treated for autism as a child as I was in special ed (I think I had ABA, group stuff, etc.) but was never given a diagnosis. The previous sentence seems weird because, how could I not know what I was being treated for? But that's the situation.

This place seems awesome and I want to be a part of the community. You guys rock!

Welcome to Wrong Planet.

I knew a young man with autism who didn't get diagnosed until he was out of school. The school had no autism program, but would have been mandated to provide him with same, so the school just didn't give him the autism diagnosis. 8O

Thank you AnonymousAnonymous (I thought you weren't supposed to use your real name on here? just kidding, LOL) and blazingstar!

Blazingstar, that sounds like a nightmare situation! I was lucky enough to get treatment-- actually, a lot of it. The reason I didn't get labeled "Asperger's" (which is what it was called when I was in high school) was that my meltdowns were so terrible that they had to get me out of public school. When I got back ("mainstreamed" I guess is the word?) the focus was on preventing me from relapsing to that older state. There wasn't a lot of, "let's make sure Lost Bread has the skills to thrive after school". It was more like, "let's save our butts and hope that this Lost Bread kid doesn't get us sued".
