Hello folks,

I figured I should officially introduce myself in the appropriate forum. I am new to all of this stuff. I had never heard of AS until about a month ago. A lady mentioned that her son had it so I went and looked it up on Wikipedia. It was weird reading about something you had never heard of before that seemed to be talking about you quite a bit.

It was also kind of comforting to see that here is a possible explanation for why I always seemed to be missing something when attempting to do small talk. I had watched people interacting and had tried to memorize what they said. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

I had always likened it to re-incarnation ( I don't believe in reincarnation, the analogy just seemed to work). It was as if everybody was comfortable talking to people and just seemed to fit in, like they had done this before. I was like a first time go around. I was sure there was something going on that I was missing, I just could not figure what it was. I was sure that if I could figure out the missing part, I would fit in like everybody else and things would be simpler like everybody else seemed to find it.

It was frustrating but that is the best I could come up with top explain it. Then I am reading about this Asperger's Syndrome and I do a bit more research and I find it described as being on the wrong planet. That analogy works just as well.

I do not seem to have all of the classic symptoms, so I asked in the general autism forum if anybody had a clue what might fit my symptoms. A few online tests were suggested and on the first one I scored a 38. A 35 was supposed to be the score for AS. Another one said I did not score real high on AS but I also scored low on the NT scale.

It was suggested that I probably have more symptoms, I just don't realize they are symptoms. In particular, stims. I do not do anything obvious like finger-flapping. Pacing and such when nervous was mentioned. I started thinking about it. I do tend to pace when nervous or keyed up. I also wiggle my foot sometimes when nervous or keyed up. I always thought of it as burning off nervous energy.

I play guitar but am, otherwise, not very coordinated. I play guitar in a Christian rock and blues band. My singer calls me the ADD poster child . I work in a computer related field doing tech support. That is all for now. I gotta go to church.

Again, Howdy.

can you post the links to the tests you took?

I figured out I had asperger's becasue of online quesitons; but they never provided me a grade; it was more like "if you fit this question" then you probably have it.

thanks,

the reincarnation thing has occurred to me before, I came to the exact conclusion too. Many on this forum will know exactly where you're coming from.

As for the nervous energy thing, I tend to always be messing with something, whether that's with my keys or pacing or whatever. The physical act seems to free up my conscious mind.

Gamer btw?

I get that Reincarnation feeling too, even on here sometimes. But I guess that has to do with how long you've been on here.

Cordelia, here are the links that TheMachine1 was kind enough to post for me:

http://aq.server8.org/
http://www.pttools.co.uk/asc/asc_wp2.php
http://www.rdos.net/eng/Aspie-quiz.php

The first one is what gave me the score of 38. The second one I was unable to read the graph (not sure if it was my browser or what. The third one is the one that said that I scored low on AS but also even lower on the NT scale. Not sure what that means.

Thank you all, for the welcome. It is good to know that I am not alone in this mess.

God bless and take care.

This is a very good analogy. I bet you'll find lots of people here who share your sense of being different, even if they express it differently. So, you are not different because you are among others who share this feeling of being different. I know that may seem a little contradictory and a little scary (I hope I'm not making your foot wiggle!), but it's true. Explore here, and you'll be able to confirm that one, I'm sure.

I hope you find good information, inspriation, companionship and comfort at Wrong Planet. And a little good humor, too. Well, it wouldn't hurt.

I'm happy that you liked my avatar. When I first saw it I laughed, too. That is one of the ways I have tried to cope with my social awkwardness. Whenever I can, I try to make people laugh. It makes them overlook your short-comings a bit. I have a lot of them I need to have overlooked. :)

Technomonk, I used to be a gamer. Specifically, Quake and Unreal Tournament. I haven't done that in a long time, though. The video card in my laptop is not up to snuff for the current games.

So what games do you play?

I do the same. Glad you found WP. It's a great forum. That is one cool avatar. :D

First, RockandBlues, no need to worry about your short-comings here!

If you show us your short-comings, I promise that at least I won't ignore them. Nope! I will take a very good look over them. There may be others here who are intersted in them too.

For me, I'm really looking for people with more short-comings than I have, so maybe I can feel like I'm not at the top of the social awkwardness and idiot spectrum.

But I haven't found anybody yet.

So, you're welcome to try.

Please.

I'm begging you.

+

Secondly.

Laughter?

What laughter?

I thought Aspies aren't supposed to have a sense of humor.

Oh no!

Yet more evidence I'm never going to fit in!

Unreal tournament :)

ut 2004 is my favorite, I've been obsessed with it for 3.5 years now. The new ut is out later this year and I'm aiming to get a new computer to play it.

I'm also fairly into guild wars.

Technomonk, I used to stay up way too late playing Unreal Tournament. I have also stayed up late playing Mechwarrior 2 many years ago.

TheMidnightJudge, I am curious, what is momentous about today? Is it your birthday?

Well, Godwit, to make you feel better about yourself, I managed to tick off my pastor the other night. So, there you go. Betcha haven't managed that recently.

Awkwardly yours,

Well, I could beat that, although it's probably best for me not to get into the details of that event here. Let's just say that it's best not to have an anxiety attack during Mass, especially when your new in the parish.

But, thanks for the thought. I really appreciate it. That was very sweet of you.

Hey, wait a minute! Next you'll be trying to take away my Idiot Moment of the Day championship ring.

Nah! You seem like you're too good a person to even try to do that to me.
