Asperger's syndrome and avoidant personality disorder have many features in common: difficulty with social interactions, proneness to anxiety, and sensitivity. Some of you may find you have avoidant personality traits.

For each criterion of anxious [avoidant] personality disorder, decide how well it applies to you personally. If it doesn't apply at all, score it as 0; if it is somewhat applicable, score it as 1; and, if it describes you quite well, score it as a 2. The minimum possible score is 0; the maximum possible score is 12. For an ICD-10 diagnosis of F60.6 anxious [avoidant] personality disorder, four criteria must be met. I measured myself as having a score of 5.

ICD-10 wrote:
(a)persistent and pervasive feelings of tension and apprehension;
(b)belief that one is socially inept, personally unappealing, or inferior to others;
(c)excessive preoccupation with being criticized or rejected in social situations;
(d)unwillingness to become involved with people unless certain of being liked;
(e)restrictions in lifestyle because of need to have physical security;
(f)avoidance of social or occupational activities that involve significant interpersonal contact because of fear of criticism, disapproval, or rejection.

Associated features may include hypersensitivity to rejection and criticism.

a - 1; b - 2; c - 1; d - 2; e - 2; f - 2 = 10

Qualifications:
a - tends to shoot up when I am forced eg through work, to have involvement
b - fluctuates, depending on circumstances
c - tend to deal with that by keeping a distance
d - can never be certain of being liked - usually end up being disliked
e - not a great socialiser or involvement in groups
f - don't like the jockeying for prestige and status; bad at it

This one seems slightly higher than I might have expected, but much of it does seem reasonably 'close to the mark'.

I would add the caveat that for all these self-assessments I have taken, they are interpretative rather than diagnostic and I may therefore, be being highly 'selective' unconsciously, in my selections.

One of the problems with the 'official diagnostic criteria' for just about any 'disorder' is that it lends itself extremely well to 'self-diagnosis' in favour of the criteria. If it does this so well, is there any reason for trusting 'informed' and 'clinical' opinion? It certainly gives me cause for concern....

Another reason for not subscribing to it, perhaps?

That's why you have to look at the criteria and not just remember one specific instance but a general tendency to do such things with frequency. A person who is very callous will be much more callous than most people. Anyway, most people have a "healthy" variant of a personality disorder, a personality style. Some people will be more flamboyant and excitement-seeking; these people will have histrionic personality styles if their personalities are more adaptive and not prone to cause them relationship, occupational, and self problems. I was hoping to use the diagnostic criteria to show no to severe manifestations of the traits of a personality type, not necessarily implying the disorder.

Anyway, I have noticed the concept of personality disorder is useful, at least as a basis for complaining about people you don't like! :lol: My boss last summer had an excess of characteristics of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (i.e., he was very anal) and also a little bit of narcissistic personality disorder. In other words, he was a pain in the bee-haahnd. Someone who has an excessive need to control every minute aspect of his employees' job duties (i.e., the exact minute when they can go on lunch and not taking a break that's even a minute too long), requiring no misplaced items on shelves, etc. clashes very strongly with a person who is highly independent, creative, contemptuous of being ordered around, and bored by tedium (me). To him, despite his intelligence, the possibility of ambiguity and no certain right answer seems to be an utterly alien concept. The right answer to him, of course, is corporate policy, which must be followed to the cross on the t. Any deviation is either proof of incompetence or a covert assault against him personally. Thank goodness he wasn't at the top of the miserable managerial pecking order (yet)!

The last two points appear to be essential qualifications for being a boss.

I do not have the best and 'most professional relationships' with my bosses, just to balance the account slightly. The term 'Schickelgruber' often is uppermost in my mind when dealing with 'bosses'.

I don't think I have an avoidant personality disorder... I promise I'll do the test soon to make sure though... in the near future... after I've done my assignments...
