Well, this is my "hello, I'm me" post.

By an unlikely chain of coincidences I found out about ASDs late last year at the age of 42. After reading a lot on WP and other places and taking the online tests I wasn't sure if this was the reason I've always felt "different" so sought a professional diagnosis.

I've now got an official DX of High Functioning Autism plus various co-morbids. After about 35 years of wondering what the ???? is wrong with me it's a relief to know.

Now have to look forward to telling my (birth) family this weekend, which is stressing me out as I don't know how they will take it.

If anyone's wondering, samotnik is a Polish word that means "loner".

Can't think what else to say. Thanks for this fantastic site Alex!

Sam

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Howdy, glad you found us.

I tried to explain one of the little gifts that can sometimes come along with the AS ride to my parents. It didn't go well. It wasn't that they weren't trying to understand, I just couldn't get them to understand it was some of the reasons I did the odd things. I could do a better job at it now, I have better terms to do it and a more complete picture of myself. I would ask myself if you even need to explain it at all. There are very few people I see the need to even know. It took a little time here to find the right terms for me to explain it, even to my wife. Some don't or are leery about anything being "wrong" to begin with. I don't think I'm, wrong either, I'm just wired differently then most. I wouldn't be in a rush to explain it to anybody, you've gone this long without knowing and so have they. When it feels right to explain it, you'll know it.

Hi Sam,

Welcome to WP, yes, families don't always take the 'news' well, partly because you're diagnosing the whole gene pool and it can affect a lot of members (their perception by others anyway), they may prefer you 'keep it quiet'.

good luck.

Welcome Samotnik,

Families don't take that news well because AS is genetic and it implies that there's something wrong with them.

Good luck.

Hi, I only found out last year and I'm 48 - shock and relief at the same time, but now at least everything makes sense.

Oh, I saw your profile once and I was wondering if, judging by your nickname, you're from Poland too :D

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice everyone. :)

Asplanet, That's exactly how I feel.

Irulan, I'm English not Polish but I work with a lot of Polish people and that has sparked an interest in your language and culture. I don't speak very much Polish yet, but I'm working on it.

I know that talking to my family is going to be difficult but I think they deserve an explanation for a lot of things past and present. I have some ideas on how to make them understand and if they work I will post them here. I suspect my mother may well have AS and if she feels anything like I did until recently learning about it may help her. I've no intention of broadcasting it any further.
