Hi all. I'm 26 years old, female, and think I have Asperger's Syndrome. I used to think I just had social anxiety, but the more I read about Asperger's the more I think I have it. I always have trouble holding conversations with people -- I never know what to say. I also have trouble making eye contact with people. It's hard for me to "read" how other people are feeling(if that makes any sense). I work at Wal-mart as a cashier and I just go through the same motions will people -- all I do is ask them how they are and if they found everything OK. And it's hard for me to make eye contact with them. When I first started working at Wal-mart 3 years ago I had to be trained an extra month because it was hard for me to grasp some things. I still don't understand everything -- like how to do returns -- so I could never work at the service desk, or be a supervisor. I guess I'm stuck being a cashier(which isn't too bad actually -- I have my bad days but mostly it's OK) Also, I get very nervous while driving -- especially at night or when it's raining. It makes it worse that I don't understand directions very well. The only places I drive are to work and sometimes to church. I have NO friends -- only time I ever had a close friend was in junior high and she moved away right before high school. It's hard because I get very lonely at times :( I was diagnosed with depression last year and am currently seeing a therapist -- I've been thinking about bringing up Asperger's with her. I also tend to "obsess" over things and search for all the info I can find on a certain subject. It changes from time to time but right now it's politics and astrology. I'm 26 and still living at home with my mother.
Well, that describes me in a nutshell. Sorry it's so long! I hope to meet people here like me and make new friends.
edited to add: my three year old cousin was recently diagnosed with PDD-NOS, which is another form of autism. So I'm wondering if it's genetic?

We all are, there has been nothing conclusive on that. Personally I think it is, just too many coincidences otherwise.

I think you should definetly bring up aspergers with your therapist, you might also wanna try some of the tests that exist online.

In the meantime, look around the site, there are plenty like you. Also, you should check out some of the games in the "Off the wall" portion of the forum. Great for lightening your mood, or so I find at least.

Welcome to Wrongplanet. (Oh and your introduction was like half the length mine was :) )

Welcome. Politics is one of my current interests. I am also dealing with some anxiety issues.

I used to work in a store. You are so lucky that you don't have to fill out return slips.

PDD-NOS is closely related to autism. I know someone who was diagnosed with it first as a young child, then later rediagnosed with Asperger's as a teen. Since your cousin has PDD-NOS and up to 10% of autism cases (but I say probably more) are genetic, according to a recent study, this factor is worth considering.

Hi Denali

welcome to WP.

Yes...ASDs can be genetic.
Don't worry...your intro post is not long at all. I've seen WAY longer haha. Yes, I think it would be a good idea to bring up aspergers with your therapist. Just make sure that shes knowledgable in ASDs...otherwise she may give you false information about it and tell you that you have it/not have it when it's the opposite.
Anyway...I hope you enjoy posting here.

Thanks for the replies all :)
After taking several online tests and reading posts on this site -- many of which sound like they could have been written by me -- I'm pretty sure I'm an Aspie. All I need is a doctor's diagnosis to confirm it. I plan on bringing it up with my therapist at my next appointment.
