Hello, I am of course new to this site and I think i will be glad I found it. Our son is 16 and it has come to light that the school thinks he has aspergers. He has been on an IEP since he was a wee little one for speech in the beginning and than it was difficulties in math and problems in writing. So he is now a freshman in high school and is struggling with anger issues and being social. I had these items pointed out to me at his 3yr. IEP meeting about a month ago and after i was given information on what Aspergers was and the signs of it. I was floored, because I think there right. I stepped back and took a new look at my son and was so surprised. We have always struggled with him in discipline and just doing the basics of listening or doing things. Since he started H.S. it has not gotten any better or easier in dealing with him...............................On my end I am almost relieved............an answer for years of frustration on all of us. We had never heard of Aspergers so this is all new to us. We are still waiting for the testing to be done, seems like an eternity.

FYI for any help or suggestions out there, he is 16.5, sensitive to noise as well as his ears are a big part of him almost like sensors, but he also has to have a TV or radio on no matter where he is, he is literal, he does not respond well to joking not even from his 5 yr. old brother, he is most concerned about himself and what he is going to do or watch in our house, without regard to the rest of us. He is also a big sports nut, he could live on ESPN and every game is important, he also has a large collection of football, baseball, and some basketball cards.

How do I go about making life easier on us. I know they use the picture cards for when the kids are little and move to word cards? If I use picture cards which ones do I use, how do I figure out the areas i need them in etc? I am just not sure how to make it easy for him to communicate with us as well as his daily duties and also stop some of the friction between him and his sister. Maybe the cards aren't what I need :?: , just at a loss here.

Thank you so much for listening I feel alone and am reading as much as i can about apsergers but hearing from other people would be nice. I think i am going to enjoy being a member.

Hi tekayb

welcome to WP.

I am the same age as your son and for me, personally, if my mother decided to use picture cards with me...I would find it quite patronizing.
When your son gets tested for AS and if he is diagnosed...ask the psychologist [of whoever diagnoses him] about that picture cards, or ways to make communication easier for him. For me, the one thing that I need from people is for them to be clear when speaking. Make sure you are doing that with your son. Avoid metaphors and sarcasm when talking to him as you said he was literal...but you knowing this, I suspect that you would have already figured this out. If not...then something you should start doing.

Anyway....have a look through the parents forum, i'm sure that they'll be able to offer you some better advice.
I hope you enjoy posting here.
