I've always known of the existence of this forum, but never joined. I don't know why. I really like forums. :D

My name is Breanne. I'm seventeen years old and I will turn eighteen in about five months. I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when I was thirteen after an eight-year struggle for a diagnosis. Although I am quite happy with who I am and I wouldn't change it, it has taken me pretty much my whole school life to get to that point. The school system was never able to handle me as a small child, and my peers alienated me. I had a very lonely childhood and am finally now getting able to communicate with people in a normal conversational way face to face. That has been a journey of almost four years.

In my spare time I like to read (my favourite book is one by a Canadian author called Heather O'Neill. The book is called Lullabies For Little Criminals), write (short stories and sometimes fan fiction), listen to music (I like the bands Pulp and The Libertines best), play The Sims, and babysit.

Er...that's about all...I guess if you want you can ask me any questions you might have. Otherwise, nice to meet you.

Edit: Oh, and after reading the avatar thread just before posting this, I hope my avatar doesn't scare anybody. It's not me, though, it's Candida Doyle--the keyboardist of Pulp.

Hi Breanne

welcome to WP.

The school system [especially public] isn't very accomodating to those with different needs than most. I found them to be useless. Not that they couldn't handle me, but I couldn't handle them.
Anyway...I hope you enjoy posting here.

P.S: No your avatar does not scare me lol.

Welcome Breanne!!

A lot of us, including myself know what it feels like to be alienated by our peers. Your peers here won't be like that.

It's good to hear you can communicate normally. I'm learning to do that myself and you've actually given me hope that I can do it too!! :D

It's a long road, and sometimes I still screw up and people are upset with me, but the way people treat you when you can carry on a conversation is just amazing. I still can't look at them, recognise tone, pick up some social cues or know when to stop talking about Pulp, but I can have a short three-to-five minute conversation without getting stressed! It's great!

Welcome Breanne.

Not only is it a long road, it's a life-long road. There will always be new challenges and obstacles to overcome. Be proud of the victories you've already achieved. Many more will come your way in time as you mature into adulthood.
