Hi there!

What to say?

Well, I'm female and 31, and I've just been told by my counsellor that I really appear to have Asperger's. Which came as a complete surprise, never having really heard of it before. I came home and did a lot of reading, found myself nodding at some parts, my partner saying 'oh yes, you do that' to some of the others...it's all very strange still.

But also comforting. I've always felt 'different' and have struggled to make friends and communicate with people. I always thought I was just a geek, not worth hanging about with, and felt so awkward that I've stayed away from people for most of my life.

It's nice to know there's a reason, or a least a name for the reason I am the way I am and for the first time in as long as I can remember I don't feel as alone.

It answers so many questions, like why I know a television coaxial cable need to have an impedance of 75 ohms, why I know several hundred words in Japanese but can't use them as I know not a word of the grammar, why I rock my head from side to side in my sleep, why I can replicate any music I hear on my keyboard.....and why I find being around people so exhausting as I always seem to 'stick' on the literal side of things they say.

It's strange to be told this. And to them read about it and see it's true, and yet, nothing has changed, I have been 'me' since I was a baby (screaming and smashing my head off walls apparently) but the label has yet to sink in I guess....

Hi and welcome to the "right" Planet 8O

I only found out I had Aspergers last year and it was a big shock at first, but it made so many things make sense and now at last I can understand the real me and just be, without the confusion and chaos...

 hey :D

Thanks for the warm welcome, I feel a bit fuzzy inside now! Also I just wanted to say it's great there are sites like this one out there, as I was lost until I found this forum and I've spent a couple days reading before I joined up.
