I'm glad to have found this place. I've never been formally diagnosed with Asperger's, but after a lifetime of never having a name for all those traits of mine that fell outside normative societal expectations, when I stumbled on the description in Wikipedia it was like everything made so much sense. I might go see about getting formally diagnosed, but I hesitate for two reasons.

1) At my age (35), it might be hard to detect since I've gotten really good at adapting and automatically suppress a lot of the more obvious symptoms.

2) I might not be diagnosed with Asperger's, and then I just become a pedantic, clinically detached, overly logical, obsessive, hyperfocused, verbose, have trouble seeing the forest because of all these damn trees, socially awkward freak again.

And now to poke around...

Hey, thanks! I should also disclose another aspect of myself that makes for a really unusual interaction. I'm a Highly Sensitive Person (look it up on Wikipedia where you can navigate to Dr. Aron's official HS Person site if you want to learn more), as diagnosed by Elaine Aron, Ph.D., herself while she was still putting the finishing touches on the research that led to her first book. It some ways, the associated traits would seem to amplify those traits associated with Asperger's, while on the other hand, other traits seem to blunt the Asperger's traits, which is why I consider myself a mild case. I'm still trying to figure it all out in terms of how these two "conditions" affect me and when either, neither, or both will kick in. Being so complicated isn't easy, but I'll take complex over simple anyday.
