Greetings and salutations. I've joined these forums on the advice of a friend who was recently diagnosed as a high-functioning autistic (is that the same as Aspergers?); she and I have a lot in common as far as personality "quirks" and antisocial tendencies, and she feels strongly that I'm a high functioning autistic too. So I figured it wouldn't hurt anything to come check the site out. I've already taken some of the quizzes I found in another thread and I scored in the Aspergers range on every one, so hey, I'm probably in the right place.
My name by the way is Crystal, I'm 30, married, no kids but 3 dogs and 3 cats. I've been unemployed for several years now, I was laid off in '03 and not long after had a long-time-coming nervous breakdown. Depression, anxiety, agoraphobia, SI, I was a mess. After a great many sessions with a kinda harsh therapist and a "ok let's try this pill now!" psychiatrist, I came away with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder, which I think is pretty accurate, all things considered. I have always been the odd child, the shy quiet one who spent too much time in her head. My mother died of lung cancer when I was 8, so I don't imagine that was helpful at all to my emotional and mental development. Anymore I'm neither shy nor quiet, but I still have a crazy-vivid imagination, and I think about things that would never cross a "normal" person's mind. I will say things that come across as much harsher than I ever intended, and I still cannot grasp the effect that my behavior has on people, particularly my husband. For instance, his parents and grandmother live nearby and we're often invited over for family dinners. I like my husband's family just fine, they're good people, but given the choice I'd rather sit at home on the couch with my dogs and watch movies. My husband gets extremely upset with me when I tell him I don't want to go, and I just don't understand why. Meh.
Anyway, this was a rather long introduction!
Too long, so I will sign off now. From what I've read, this looks like a great community, and I look forward to being a part of it.
