Well, I've done enough lurking. Don't know if I'm fitting specifically into any diagnosis, but, either way, I'll be damned if you guys aren't brethren. Only really noticed how much in common I have with AS in the past month. Might as well start out with the bonefides:
Reasons why I may have AS:
-Difficulty with interpersonal relationships. No close friends for a solid 10 years now. Chronically single.
-Some OCD tendencies.
-Pacing while thinking.
-Can't remember names or faces.
-I have a neutral facial expression most of the time.
-Get overwhelmed easily in busy situations. Difficulty comprehending people in noisy situations. Difficulty understanding verbal instructions.
-Picky eater, tend to wear basic clothing (solid colors), and devise ways to minimize grooming (shave my head every 9 months and sport a beard), odd posture when sitting.
-I'm possessive about things such as chairs.
-Think deeply on a handful of subjects at a time. Have become an expert in Star Wars, politics (conservative), Buffy, and am currently developing a base in animation.
-Horrible handwriting.
-Dislike being touched.
-I've been told that I'm blunt or mean during times when I haven't meant any offense.
Reasons why I may not have AS:
-It's been mentioned here that you guys think in an unusually visual manner. I'm the polar opposite. I think mostly in abstract concepts and words. In fact, when a professor mentioned that most people use visualization as a form of memory encoding, it baffled me and I asked if people really do that.
-I don't have much difficulty in reading people's body language. In fact, I rather enjoy studying the way people move.
-I've got some conflicting data on clumsiness. As a child I enjoyed sports and practiced hard, but often got picked last for teams (possibly for social reasons, possibly because I looked awkward, I don't know). As an adult, I picked up a baseball bat for the first time in years and found that I could still hit a ball solidly with minimal effort.
Anyway, I'm not much stressed out about this either way. If it turns out I have AS, I suspect I'd be pretty open about it. If it turns out I don't...well I'll be a little embarrassed by this post, won't I?
Despite a touch of loneliness, I'm in a good place in my life and have many things to keep me occupied. I'm not big on the whole success thing. As long as I've got enough money to pay the bills, I'm cool. Never much understood the whole race for posessions.
I went back to school about 18 months ago just for the fun of learning and am approaching a BA. Turns out that in the intervening 6 years between when I dropped out and came back, I somehow became significantly smarter (I suspect this comes from binging on hundreds of difficult subjects during my politics obsession). Even without taking notes (thanks to my lousy handwriting and inability to do two things at once), I'm managing straight As without too much effort. Pretty sweet ego boost there. With success comes attention, which is also nice (even though I don't recognize most of the people who come up to me and ask me questions outside of class).
Not saying it's been all fun. Dropped out of high school, was pretty angry for awhile in my late teens, early 20s (I'm 29 now btw), but recognized I was being self-destructive and I succeeded in turning myself around. At the least I like myself again.
Anyway, hello to the welcome wagon.
