Since finding out what Asperger's is two days ago, I've been in a state of shock. From everything I've read and all the stories of others, apparently, I've finally got the answer to "What the heck is WRONG with me?". You have no idea . . . well, maybe you do . . . how RELIEVED I am to know that there are a whole lotta people out here who won't think I'm nuts when I speak about my quirks. I spent a lot of time yesterday alternating between laughter and tears.

I've was a very "shy" child. Mortified in social situations, especially when I was forced. Even in kindergarden, I'd go off by myself at playtime and paint while the other girls played with the fake kitchen. lol I saw nothing wrong with that.

I'd go to teen gatherings with a book to read because I knew I'd be left in the corner. And I was ridiculed for it. :::sigh:::

And at the tender age of 48, it STILL happens. Well, I don't take a book, but I still end up at the end of the sofa watching TV.

And yet, I have SO MUCH to talk about. All I ever need is that one person . . .

And here I am. Oh sure, there's a lot more to tell, but that will happen over time. In the meantime, I think WrongPlanet will be my new addiction.

I spoke with my mother today. She's 87 and I am her clone. The first thing she said was, "I have NO autistic children!". And then she went on to talk about her experiences which fall directly in range of Aspergers. Sweet denial. I love her.

Hello! I assume you like cats a lot? So do I! My cat Spice I arguably love more than most people I know.

We get people discovering themselves here every day, and I'm unsure if that's comforting or not. I didn't have quite as much of a revelation, 1) I'm 39 years younger than you, 2) I think that being different is really cool.

I personally think that they key to enjoying life as an elder parson is to retain your youth. Of course that's easy for me to say.

ROFL! Thank you Alex! I am seriously sitting here laughing my head off! You are the first person to ever refer to me using the word "Elder". And that hit me so funny! I can't wait to tell my sisters I've made it over the hill!
48 really isn't that "old" once you get there. We're still partyin. :> (And most people actually think I'm 32 to look at me, but ::shhhhh:::)
I remember when I turned 25, I cried my eyes out because I was five years away from 30! Yeesh!

Um...I also remember when I was 17 and I thought my mom was ancient, too. So...

I was only diagnosed myself last year at the age of 48 and it was also a shock at first, but with understanding came acceptance. Now less than one year on I can not express how much of a difference it has made to me, set me free of all the anger, frustrations and confusion, and allowed me to finally find the real me.

Like you I feel my mother had, to late for her now. Autism spectrum disorder it’s not a dirty word that we should only mention behind closed doors, like often the older generation still do. We all need to embrace, talk about and learn from each other if not for this generation, but the nexts.

As a child we do not know or understand
Growing up it can be terrifying and confusing
In old age acceptance and exclusion...

asplanet: I'd wondered since I learned more about this just how it would affect my attitude going forward. On one hand, I thought, okay - so there is a name for this and a lot of people are dealing with it. But that doesn't ease my ongoing frustrations. It'll be interesting to see if that changes at all for me. I'm glad to hear it's been a real positive for you! And yeah, my mother seemed a little panicky at the idea that any of her daughters might have a personality disorder, but she did have to admit to a lot of our shared characteristics

Social Fantom: I love your name! And Stinker is beautiful! That's a great name - I call my cat "stinker" sometimes.
