When I was three and a half and still hadn't started talking, my parents (refusing to accept that I was mentally ret*d) brought me to yet another doctor....after watching me ignore a room full of toys to obsess over a door hinge for an hour, the doctor told my parents I was autistic. To which my then 32 year old father replied..."BS, that's how I was when I was little." They didn't know back then that this tends to run in families...well eventually I learned how to talk just before my fifth birthday and depending on who you ask it might not be a good thing.....I have the the tendency to ramble.

So 8,418 or so days later....I'm 26, been out of college for seven years (even graduated early), and I work as a formulation chemist for a big cosmetics company. I also have grapheme-color synesthesia which makes me really good at math, and I have a really good memory (especially for anything to do with numbers).

I'm aware that my brain works differently. I have learned to compensate for my "autistic" traits as I got older. Instead of rocking I will tap my foot, click a pen, or fidget in some other way....most of the time I am constantly moving. Although when I'm really stressed out at work I will occasionally find myself rocking until someone asks me why I'm rocking and I stop.

I'm that weird girl at work who says "hi" to you but hardly every looks at you. I see no point in looking at people when I talk to them...I'm talking to their ears, not their eyes, but I force myself to anyway...because that's what the normal people do....I'm the weird girl who knows every lot number and raw material number of every raw material she's ever worked with in every batch of makeup she's ever made at every company she's ever worked at.....I'm also the girl you ask why your car is making that funny noise or stalling, why your check engine light is on....and the one you go to the the colloid mill breaks if maintenance isn't around......still no one at work knows I have this.

I think if my diagnosis came later I may have been diagnosed with Asperger's....but I got my dx in 1985.....and at that point I was still non-verbal, and asperger's was a brand new dx....

ROFLMAO!! !! My father always said I have an extreme fondness for the sound of my own voice. I've, not infrequently, actually followed people into the bathroom whilst holding court on some topic of particular interest.

Regards,

I do too.....I have a tendency to talk to myself. I do it all the time, usually when I'm alone, but I've been known to talk to myself at work too (not so weird, we all do). I can go on and on about anything really......I'm sort of my own therapist. I'm better at talking to myself than to other people.

Hi Sublyme, Welcome to Wrong Planet, I was very fascinated by those door
stoppers, the springy ones that made boing noises, when pulled, I would
spend hours doing that, I feel compelled now, just talking about it

I read it....sounds similar. I was also bullied in school. Especially because I wasn't mainstreamed....either in special ed, or "alternative school." I was also really skinny and small for my age....I was more well received by my peers when I grew breasts......

I'm not sure what I would be diagnosed with now actually. I did see a psychiatrist several times I also have bipolar disorder....mania + autism= a very interesting combination ... so much in fact that I gave up on the medication....that's what leads to lots of patents...

Anyway she was convinced that I couldn't be an aspie because I was speech delayed, aspie kids usually aren't.....so she said I would either have PPD-NOS or just HFA....I don't have all the asperger's traits...only some of them.

Anyway thanks for the welcome.....this is one place I won't feel so much like an outsider.

My aspie score was 163/200, my NT score 43/200....I know I have some form of autism...somewhere on the spectrum. I don't really care what they call it. I'm just me....I might not be like everyone else, but I'm good at being me I suppose. I've always scored pretty high on those types of tests.....I was actually diagnosed with autism when I was little, I'm guessing that's not something you grow out of, just grow up with....my AQ score was 46/50......

Hi Sublyme welcome

Your story is not so different from mine, unfortunatelly far to many of us have never quite understood ourselves until like myself diagnosed only last year, it truly was a revelation to be diagnosed with aspergers and other associated conditions, but at last I understand who I really am...

Hi Sublyme,

I think everyone is different. I allegedly was walking and talking at around 1 years old and talked non stop before around the age of 6-7 I withdrew into myself, probably because my mother committed suicide!

I'm not sure how common it is for aspies to be talkers and quick developers, it appears there are many who learn to talk later.

I took one of those tests for Aspergers and got i think it was 140, it had some mad pye chart which I didn't understand as i was hopeless at maths/sciences etc!

So, I wouldn't worry about it, just accept who/what you are!
