Hey all. My name is Cody, and I was diagnosed with AS in 2001. Since then, I've been consciously struggling with the problems of trying to live in an NT world and dealing with NT people. I was thrilled when I found the huge community you have here, and I've been lurking for a while. This is my first post, and I look forward to participating in the discussion here.
A little bit about me: I'm a grad student in math at the University of Texas. I'm trying to finish my dissertation so that I can graduate and get a job as a teacher, preferably at the college level. I do a lot of math teaching in my spare time, and I enjoy coming up with problems and puzzles. It is safe to say that mathematics is my "Aspie obsession."
The reason I'm here is a bit funny - for the last few years, I spent a lot of time on a dating website trying to meet people. Eventually I became upset at how insensitive the people were there, and how often I got ignored by other people. I realized that the "community" I had there wasn't that much a community - I was putting a lot in and not getting anything out. In the meanwhile, I watched the membership of this site grow day by day, and I saw how supportive you all are of each other. I've decided that I want to be a part of that, too - not necessarily because I feel I need that much support myself, but because I feel like this is a chance to help people, and this is a place where my experience as an Aspie in an NT world is truly relevant.
I look forward to talking with some of you. Thanks to the founders of WrongPlanet for setting up a safe place for people with autism-spectrum disorders to gather and share their experiences.
