I wanted to say I love the site and (finally) just registered.
My answers are up on the question postie thingy.
I really didn't know how to categorize myself since the drop down box for diagnosis/relationship to the spectrum didn't allow for selection of multiples.
About me: I am not officially diagnosed; it is interesting how the "DSM" list fits me yet does not describe me. But the more I read this site, the more I believe I fit better here than in any other category or whatever; if there is something approaching a neurological type, this is what mine is, at least in what they've discovered so far, and as is frequently stated, spectrum persons are more diverse than others give them credit for.
I know AS possibly explains a lot about my past...and my present..and my son's present, as we are gearing up for a diagnosis of...some sort...with him, I am sure of it, his teacher is concerned about his "odd play" and "ritualistic behavior", his "delayed echolalia" and fetish for cars. I hear the concern and the pity, I hear her say the buzzwords and that she has "referred him" to the right specialists, they will be calling me. At first I freaked out, but now I see a boy that has a sensitive, joyful, and persistent spirit that, with proper guidance, will find ways around and/or through life's obstacles. If one of those obstacles happens to be the unrepentant pity and discomfort of others.
I'm a female in my mid-30s, with a somewhat successful life, although sometimes I feel like that has been hard won, and other times I say "well, it depends on how you define success". People tell me I do things the hard way (a lot) and I say that that is the only way I know how to do things. It's hard to explain. Reading the thoughts of (other?) aspies like on this site really does feel to me a lot like having someone finally, finally undertand.
So, I hope you give my thoughts some respect and I hope to not offend anyone.
With that, I say "hello"
