Hi Krista and welcome to the wrongplanet. I understand your concerns. I am 44 years old and have been diagnosed with Asperger's. With that in mind, I realize there is a better than average chance of my sons having it---and there are flags pointing to my 7 year old right now for Asperger's. So trust me---I understand.
Now, here is what my family is doing. First of all, I am going tomorrow for my first "coaching skills" session concerning some issues with my autism and socializing/family matters. Second, I am taking my sons to the clinic later at which time we may pursue the diagnosis for the seven year old. My twelve year old has some ADHD issues.
I mention this because while there is no cure for autistic spectrum disorders, there are ways of dealing with it to make life easier. Since your son already has the diagnosis, (many experts consider Asperger's and high functioning autism as the same), then you might consider an expert to deal with issues with him. Please---do your research. And make sure the research sounds valid. There is a lot of garbage out there.
I am currently finishing a gifted endorsement to be added to my teaching certificate since I now am a high school gifted teacher. My actual label is Gifted Intervention Specialist. So I have done a lot of research in these areas (autistic spectrum disorders, especially Asperger's---High Functioning---can exist alongside giftedness). I would encourage any parent with a suspected Asperger's/high functioning child to investigate the possibility of giftedness. While giftedness usually occurs alone, it can exist with a spectrum disorder such as Asperger's.
You mentioned that your son has begun wetting the bed and has lost interest in drawing. That is something I think you should mention to your doctor/expert/whoever did the diagnosis.
Please keep us informed. Though most of us (me included) are not experts, most of us can relate to the autistic spectrum and share our experiences. And remember, you are not alone---your son is not alone. Best of luck to your family.
