I joined this forum a long time ago but didn't do anything with my account since I was busy with other things and already had plenty of other forums I've visited. But lately I've become more aware of how my autistic/asperger like symptoms interferes with my life and relationships. So I need a place like this to talk about these things with people who understand more than ever.

One of the things which I'm seeking support for is getting myself a PSD (Psychiatric Service Dog). I could of seriously benefited from one back in 2001, but I wasn't aware that I could get one for my condition back then. So all these years I've had to "tough it out", taking 10 times a long to progress than the typical person. Now, I'm graduating in May (with a GPA much much lower than it could of been with proper treatment) and will begin a new chapter in my life. I want that chapter of my life to have a PSD in it, because if getting to this point was hard, this next phase is going to be much much harder. Nothing would make me feel better than knowing I have my Constant Companion by my side every day. I already have the support from two psychiatrists that I'm seeing who can vouch for me if I ever need back-up.

I already know what dog I'm going to get: a Newfoundland. Since my specifications are so precise I will pick him out, raise him, and train him all myself. I have a lot of experience with dogs so I know I'll be able to do that okay. But there's a lot which needs to be done to get to that point, and anyone who can point me in the right direction is much appreciated.

P.S. I love the colors on this forum!

Thanks for that wonderful welcome, JetLag.

After reading multiple topics on this forum, I've been delighted to see that I share many of the same problems with many others on this forum. For so long I thought it was simply because I was insufficient, or mediocre or other self-esteem defeating ideas. Perhaps I may be according to the NT standards, but I'm not NT. I'm just different with different ways of viewing the world and interacting with my environment. I'm hoping that my Newfie will be able to help me bridge that gap.

I've been living alone for about a decade now, and having to rely on my own wits or drown has forced me to learn to cope, but at a great cost. After a time I intend to write a more thorough introduction of myself and what I've been through and what I've learned.

Welcome. Is that Hobbes in the picture?

Good luck picking out a dog. The puppy stage is wonderful and dreadful too. I took in a husky/malumute/chow dog in hopes that I could find her an owner. I've had her for 6 years now. She was an abused dog. It was sad. Anyway, she is so cool, but she has that chow in her that only wants to be with one person. She is shy and has that warrior spirit of a good watch dog. If anyone would like to adopt her, please pm me. She is housebroken already and is not a barker unless she perceives a threat. She thinks she is a lap dog too. It would be sad if she dies without ever having a great one on one relationship. I already have a dog "Lucy", she's a jack russell/chihuahua and Buffy (husky/chow) acts like Lucy is her master. It's a very dysfunctional relationship.

She is neutered too. I want to give her to a male since chows were bred to be companion animals to soldiers.

Hi Magnus, that is Hobbes on my avatar. I haven't drawn a picture of SpazzDog to use as my avatar yet, perhaps I'll get around to it this summer. So I used a forum provided avatar of Hobbes. I was a big fan of Calvin and Hobbes as a kid and I still appreciate the comic strip. I have all the books in my book collection.

Your Chow sounds like a great dog. But I'm not an ideal situation for her since I already have a multi-dog home without my Newfie.

Hi aspiegirl2001.

Best of luck with the PS dog. Newfies are one of my favorite breeds- phenomenal choice for a service dog :)

You can learn more about PSDs for autism here:

I'd have to agree! Or else I wouldn't of chosen the breed. :P But based on what I've learned about them and the few I've met, I like them quite a bit. I haven't contacted local breeders yet, I feel it's too early. But I should so I can have more interactive experience with the breed.
