I’m 38, partnered, and a mother of one son. I had never heard of Asperger’s until about five years ago after scoring high results on an evaluation on Schizoid personality disorder…it was suggested at that time, because although I have many traits of SPD it doesn’t “quite fit”, or so I was told.
I am never pursued anything further, and not sure I want to, although I have most all of the traits. I am happy in my “world” and for the most part I think I function pretty well. I am very much a loner, and dislike social interaction, which my partner does not understand at times.
I like numbers and if everyone was assigned one I would do a lot better at remembering probably…because I am awful at names
, I am always picking out patterns or shapes in things, wood paneling, clouds.
My father used to keep me occupied by handing me a screwdriver and a broken clock. I would set fascinated for hours just taking it apart. He and I were a lot alike and collected a great number of things together and shared the same interests. I like to say he was a “detail” person like I am, we spotted things most people missed, and dwelled on them longer. I did very well in school, but dropped out in high school partly because I could just not “fit in” and partly because of health problems (I had severe IBS, and was getting teased quite a bit).
I remember trying out for cheerleading because everyone else did… and finding out it was impossible for me to keep rhythm. LOL I am a bit on the clumsy side, and don’t keep too many breakables around due to that fact.
I couldn’t sleep if my mother re-arranged my bedroom, chopped the tags out of every piece of clothing I owned…and preferred for the most part doing things by myself. I hate talking on the phone… I go blank. I like routine, and can get unsettled when someone disrupts it.
I see a few of my “quirks” in my son who is now 6…but for the most part he seems “normal” (is there really such a thing?), and he is doing very well in school.
Any other parents here? I've been reading posts for awhile...I can relate to so many of them. Like finding more of "me".
