Hey whats up my names Matt. I'm 17 years old from New Jersey, USA, and I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome when I was 3 years old. Apparently I was one of the first people to be diagnosed with it who was of a very young age (when it became an officially diagnosis around 94/95) or so, and I consider myself fortunate in that respect because I was given therapeutic help right away and over the years many of my symptoms have lessened considerably, however, there are definitely still times when I feel disconnected with others, including my own friends who do not have AS...which is basically why I joined this forum, I figured it would be cool to get into a community of people who share my disability.

I focus my obsessive AS tendencies predominantly on heavy metal music...which is very special to me because it gave me, for the first time in my life, a sense of belonging in something outside of AS...I also have been playing guitar for about 3 years and have been in a few bands. I also like to play Real Time Strategy video games, read sci fi books (just starting to get into this, but my all time favorite is Brave New World)...and...thats basically everything that pops off the top of my head.

Looking forward to getting more involved here. Thanks.

ooh, I like "Brave New World" and may I suggest "This Perfect Day" (1970), by Ira Levin, and my very favorite "A Canticle for Leibowitz" by American Walter M. Miller, Jr.

I found "1984" to be very dreary.

Merle

oh, and welcome home!

Love heavy metal.

I rather liked Dawn of War and Starcraft.

I could go on for hours about this... I highly recommend anything written by Vernor Vinge, Ender's Game, Protector, The Foundation Trilogy, The Science Fiction Hall of Fame Volume One 1929-1964, and The Super Hugos. The last 2 are compilations of short stories, and almost every single story is a personal favorite. The Super Hugos is the only one on the list that you probably can't find easily just by walking into a large bookstore, I think it's out of print. It is on amazon, though.

Hi Matt,

I am a mom of a 6 year old dx with AS and a 2 year old showing many signs of AS. I just read your post and am curious about your early childhood years. Do you remember the therapies that have helped you the most? What about ones that helped you the least? I know you joined this to find support and may be weren't expecting someone like me to ask you questions....but if you are willing to share with me more about your experiences, I would appreciate it. I am trying to understand my kids and the best way to help them.

Thanks!
