Obsessive compulsive traits
I noticed I seem to have some obsessive compulsive traits. In Psychology, my professor gave us a test and I was one of the few people who scored in the highly obsessive compulsive range. I do things like organize the clothes in my closet in color order. I also am very aware of germs. I wash my hands/dishes/toothbrush-you name it-very thoroughly. I hate touching doorknobs; I open doors with my sleeve. I also won't touch toilet flushers or sink knobs with my bare hands. For awhile I used to have to eat on paper plates with plastic utensils and drink from paper/plastic cups. I felt that silverware and plates got "dirty" from being in cabinets. I would also feel grossed out from even the slightest stain on them. To this day I get grossed out pretty easily.
Anyone else think they have obsessive-compulsive traits? If so, describe them! ![]()
Heres my post off this thread; http://www.wrongplanet.net/asperger.htm ... highlight=
*except in public toilets, i dont really get anxious but im much happier if i can pull the doors open with a little finger, or operate the taps with a wrist/elbow.
some examples;
-clearing up broken glass is a major ordeal and ill be reluctant to handle food afterwards. stray fragments can play havoc with the intestinal tract.
-I sometimes watch heroin addicts on the bus to avoid touching anything they touch (im allergic to heroin)
-When i used to smoke, i needed a quarantine period after the slightest exposure to gas or petrol (just in case the smoke ignited flammable lung residues) - sparking up discreetly outdoors in the wind was a complete nightmare!
-I sometimes hold my breath or breathe shallowly to walk past asbestos-cement (which is everywhere)
-Ill creep through an alleyway to avoid touching any poisonous plants (which i will have identified at 20 paces).
-Ill pick up a battery using clingfilm, just in case any trace of corrosive material somehow ends up in my mucous membranes.
and the strange thing is i KNOW those last 2 are completely irrational because i used to eat random plants and spent matches as a child, licked leaking batteries and nothing much ever happenned.
It not always that serious, anything that cures anxiety (exercise etc) helps clear it up somewhat. Now that i know i have AS & associated sensory issues its getting much easier because i have a rational explanation for my symptoms, and dont have to look for external toxins to make sense of it.
i'm diagnosed with OCD but i don't have any contamination obsessions. my OCD behaviours are more centered around counting / checking compulsions. almost everything i do in my domestic life is done in a ritualistic way.
i think that my oddest obsessive-compulsion was when i used to press the palms and backs of my hands on my bedroom wall and mattress several hundred times every night, before going to bed (this was when i was seven years old).

Yeah, mine are counting ones, and doing things a certain way.
Have to do things in multiples of 3 (except anything with the digit 9 in) or other specific numbers if multiples of 3 just can't be done;
Have to wipe myfeet against the opposite leg 3 or 6 times before putting a sock on, then before the shoe goes on as well;
Have to do certain things with certain hands, ie drink with left, push open doors with right shoulder, carry violin in the left and viola in the right when I have both (otherwise either goes on the left, though it bugs me because the case is either the wrong way round, or the outside's not facing out)
wipe feet on the doormat 6 times, starting with the left;
left arm in jumper first, left leg in trousers first; then left first out again
carry things under left arm until I can really hold no more, then I have to go to the right;
have to have matching cutlery (we have four different sets; my knife and fork have to be matching unless it really is impossible)
If I have a piece of music stuck in my head, I have to count and walk and do everything in time to it;
I have to be in step with as many people around me as possible; (starting counting on the left)
And I've probably forgotten loads more. I'm certain I have.
(Believe it or not I'm actually more right-handed than left by the way, ie I write better with my right)

I didn't realize how many OCD traits I had until I was in a seminar on it for my job a few weeks ago. When the guy was talking about certain traits (and how extreme they can be) my coworkers were looking shocked but I was thinking, "Yeah, that sounds familiar..." For me it's mostly centered around precision and accuracy. Things have to be done a certain way/lined up/organized a certain way/counted, etc... The other big thing for me is getting stuck in obsessive thought patterns. Not necessarily negative or disturbing thoughts, just intrusive in that it consumes time and prevents me from getting other things done.
I'm fairly obsessive-compulsive (though not full-blown OCD). I have a dirt/germ thing which is a combination of OCDishness and sensory issues: I hate touching anything someone else has touched, like door handles and railings, because 1) I hate the oil from people skin which is left behind and I can feel it on those surfaces, and 2) the oil makes me think "Argh! This is really dirty!". So I have a bit of a double aversion, though truly the only illness I fear having is a stomach virus. Other illnesses I don't really fear having. So it doesn't make all that much sense to fear it being dirty I guess, except in stomach flu season.
Also, I'm very picky about the layout of my apartment. It's cluttered, but everything is in its specific place. It looks like a mess, but it's actually very organized, lol.
I'm also anal about organizing information-- or really anything for that matter-- and get really anxious if I can't do things "my way".
I also have a general (though definitely not strict) routine.
And I find myself straightening things when I'm out and about. Like if I go to a restaurant, I find myself straightening the utensils or the napkin or the candle in the middle of the table or the salt and pepper shakers...
My OC traits become more obvious when I'm nervous because ordering something has a calming effect on me.

Sophist, your sig (a cat in your pants) reminds me of something that happened to my sister yesterday. She walked into a business and there was a mentally challenged guy in there who started hitting on her. "My name is Kevin. I'm single and I'm looking. Do you wanna see a picture of my cat?" My sister wondered if it was just a dirty pick-up line, or did he really have a picture of his cat in his pocket? (It turned out to be a real pic of his kitten. Phew.)
Hehehehe... It might be an interesting pickup line to use sometime, too.
My sig was inspired by my cat, Sunny, who is the guard of the bathroom and likes to hop into peoples' pants while they--erm, use the facilities.

I do at least half the things you mentioned. When eating, I tend to pick my food apart and toss aside discolored areas or veins in meat; I also stack the bowls and plates on my tray after eating. When I'm driving and I think someone adjusted the mirrors, I keep adjusting the rearview mirror to get it right so that I can see properly. I also have to have computer code properly indented and everything. I also like to write out abbreviations sometimes (not so much anymore); I tend to use a very thorough, precise language.

Se, knew I'd forgotten things. Ditto for above - Lol I walked into a room for German and immediately noticed the candles and mini tree on top of the TV (don't ask!) weren't arranged symmetrically. I tried to resist, but after a couple of minutes I just HAD to make them symmetrical ... I got weird looks from the others, but it was bugging me so much!
Oh yeah, I'm obsessed with getting soap completely off my hands - liquid soap is a right pain because it takes at least three lots of rubbing before it comes off (ie I have to go back at least twice.)
I also have to know what lessons my friends in my year have - I have to know where they are in relation to myself whenever possible.
I've probably still missed loads of other things ...

Marc Summers and Howie Mandel would be able to tell you about some OCD traits if they joined this forum for sure.
I can definitely relate to the obessive thoughts. They make it hard for me to get things done for school, and I have trouble paying attention in class too.

I don't pick my food apart, but I am very picky about what I eat. If I eat something I don't like, I often will feel sick. When I go to restaurants, I basically always order the same thing because just about everything comes with something I don't like.
LOL I am glad I am not the only one doing this! I have color gradiated my closet!
I have to shop counter clockwise, (although I have been able to over come this one fairly well)
I have a "fresness" thing. It takes me about 20 minutes to pick out bread, because it has to be FRESH. I have to have my remote before going to bed. I have back up remotes in case I cannot locate it, because I cannot sleep without it. I get very upset if my routine or plans are disturbed.
I am not as clean as "Monk" but i have to have everything in its place.
When I can focus I am a fastidious organizational freak. (wow that was a mouthful), when I am sidelined by my obsessions or just too stimmed to focus, I cannot take the time to do any of that and my work and home suffers.
So I guess yeah I can relate.

Knew I'd forgotten some more things! Food - I eat each thing separately (eg I'll eat the pasta first, then the tomatoes, then the sweetcorn, then the courgettes in the sauce)
I have to put aside the veins etc (the thought of eating them makes me feel sick)
Oranges are a nightmare! I have to get every single bit of pith off before I'll even contemplate eating them - still, they last longer and it keeps me occupied!
I have to make sure all the gristle and fat are out of meat / poultry before I'll eat any [meat]
I skin apples / pears etc - I'll go round eating the skin first, then eat the flesh (same applies to raw potatoes)
Soups - I'll try to eat as much of it without herbs / vegetables etc as possible, then eat the rest (saving the best til last, I've always said
And LOADS more food ones!
Wow. A lot of my obsessive traits are food-based lol!
