The "login" tab at the top of the page links to a malware "windows defender" site.

Oh LOL it does too.

When I click the login button it tries to open a link with a bunch of Russian letters in it.

My guess is that they took advantage of the recent removal of SSL from the site to inject hacked code.

... Which probably also means that they've been monitoring login details, passwords, emails, whatever.

Good thing I use a unique password for every site I visit

It is not exclusive to the login button.

Clicking anywhere on the front page will cause this.

Is there a chance that our passwords have been compromised and should we change them or am I just being paranoid.

Paranoia keeps you healthy. If you use the same username and password on other sites, I recommend you change the other sites.
I am not worried about mine. I have four sets of usernames and passwords in order of lowest to highest threat risk:
Sites with no links to my actual identity
Sites with links to my true identity
Sites containing my personal information
Sites for banking and payments
