what is wrongplanet's mandate regarding encouraging members to challenge existing patterns of inequalities existing in our societies?

Does wrongplanet support sexist power dynamics in effect in our societies and if not what is being done to make sure members KNOW that furthering hateful stereotypes will not be tolerated?

I have found in my 2 (3? not sure anymore) days as a members that I have rarely encountered so much sexist remarks in such a short time, men posting on the woman only forum, being completely unaware and unwilling to see that they are infringing on space not open to them, men referring to women as "pieces of ass" encouraging each other in continuing the sexual objectification of all women, creating dichotomous representations of NT women as desirable (because they're seen as stupid) and Aspie women as necessarily undesirable because they're smart?

Do the adminstrators of this site realize that this actually encourages ableist stereotyping which harm all non-normative people?
which are counter-productive in a space the aim of which seems to be to foster increased self-esteem in people marginalized because of who they are?

If I chose to continue posting on this site, will it mean I have to put up with sexist, woman-hating comments, ignorant homophobic comments, internalized hatred from people terrified to align themselves with other disabled people, and hateful racist comments, all of which can be excused because those making them have asperger's, therefore this grants them immunity to be hurtful?

Do you have a set of guidelines which the moderators follow ?
If not, why not?
Are your moderators aware of anti-oppression principles?

I understand that there are people of all lifestyle and all ages on this site and that this can make any type of "policing" of content a daunting if not impossible task.

However, there should still be room for giving people warning that their behaviour and words are not acceptable and that precisely BECAUSE there are young people on this site , encouraging sexist behaviour by presenting it as normal , even natural, is not something you should want to sweep under the carpet.
It is NOT o.k. to encourage young men to view sex with women as an act of war
It is NOT o.k. to encourage young women to view themselves as terrain to be conquered who's only value are how closely they mirror arbitrary and harmful cannon of beauty.

It is NOT o.k. to encourage young people in thinking that healthy sexuality can be found in media representations of what is 'manly' or 'feminine', according to the latest video.

if you can let me know what exactly IS in place to make sure this site is as inclusive and safe to most members possible ,and where it can be found on the site, I would greatly appreciate it.
Hear Hear! This is something that has worried me virtually from day 1, especially all the sexist and derogatory comments about women. It marginalises people such as me who are both disabled and female.

I can imagine it would be even worse if I were also gay and non-caucasian. I might not have expressed myself as well as Catherine as to exactly what was bothering me but was very disappointed to find how many sexist comments were appearing. I thought AS guys would have been nicer than that as the ones I know personally are usually much more respectful towards women.

All I can think is maybe some of these people are venting but others seem to enjoy shocking readers. This is likely to cause serious problems if young and naive members take their advice and comments seriously.

I don't know an easy answer but something has to be done about it.

So you want this site to make you feel perfectly welcome from day one, the comfort of others be damned, eh? It doesn't work like that.

Refusing to enforce some rigid mindset of what is and isn't "right" isn't the same as encouraging what may be wrong.

If the free speech of some members creates a hostile environment for some who the forum is intended to serve, that should be considered a problem. It may be decided that the free speech is valued more, but this should be a decision, not a presumption.

I'm not sure where this is located, but I believe somewhere in the rules. . . like, in the first item. . . it mentions that language that is racist, sexist, or belittling other groups on WP is not allowed. Language that is intrinsically derogatory to women pops up from regularly, but is not, in my opinion, the real problem. More frequently- and quite pervasively- the problem is seen in semi-reasonable arguments that display a very misogynist world view.

While I would hardly wish to argue that quashing individual perspective is an acceptable way to go about changing this, I do feel it needs attending to. Not by censorship, for the most part; since it is in the rules that certain things are not allowed, those rules should be enforced, but I'm thinking of something else. If the people who run WP seriously intend it to be a useful place for women, there should be

a) Some public and reasonably prominent statement to the effect that women and men are considered equal here, and that while opinions to the contrary will not be censored, they are not condoned by the WP management/ownership/establishment.
and

b) A very precise definition of what language is not permitted- among other reasons, so that it's quite clear that the moderators aren't failing to remove posts because they agree with them. This is not an accusation; it appears, though, that a lot of things go uncensored because free speech is valued. It would be helpful if it were clear that they do stay for the sake of free speech, not because they are considered acceptable by the governing interests of the site on any other grounds.

I make this argument from the perspective of one who has given a great deal of serious thought to the possibility that women are genuinely inferior to men. If I weren't beyond the need to question that now, the fact that this assertion of inequality seems to lurk not far behind the words of so many WP members would make it a very difficult place for me to come.

I have no problem with a men's forum. . . I would have no problem with men reading the women's forum, provided they were quiet if they couldn't be respectful. I'd expect to have to display the same decorum reading there.

Of course, these are suggestions in the case that making WP female friendly is a priority. If not. . . well, then not, and I suppose I'd have to argue about that on other grounds.

Yes, to some extent the members really might need
some protection. But, in general, making such types
of decisions is so subjective in nature, that it is almost
certain that bias will creep in.

Indeed. As it should be. But, it's not really
necessary for the staff to remove any but
the most egregious violations. The membership
seems to do a pretty good job of calling people
on such BS.

It does? Damn, I must have missed much of this.

Yep. But, you really can't expect the mods to be the PC police.
That would turn this site into one with a clear agenda.

Sounds fairly reasonable.

In general, nothing much SHOULD be removed. If there is a particularly
offensive wording, especially when one is circumventing the censor, the
post may need to be edited. If it appears to qualify under hate speech
definitions, then definitely. And, if there is nothing of any value in the
post, removal is reasonable.

Any system of censorship will entail value judgements; I'm only asking that these be made transparent. I value free speech quite a lot, but I wouldn't host an open forum without transparency regarding my own biases. I also wouldn't do it without a very clear idea of what things I wanted to accomplish, and what the priorities among these things would be.

I have values that come a bit higher on my priority list than free speech does, but I'd like to voice my agreement with this.

As I've said before, the posted rules are a bit misleading, as the de facto rules are not quite the same.

well, yes, you are right, but one problem I see here is interpretation, as I have noticed a little here, some things have been misunderstood sometimes, I have been misunderstood sometimes too, aspies tend to take things literally so I guess that's part of the problem, when someone makes a statement, but there is the possiblity that the person doesn't really mean it, I think a sexist remark can be made by a guy without noticing it, I say this because I think that happened to me, sometimes I guess I might say something that appears to be sexist or offending anyone without even realising that, but I am definitely not trying to do that and to be like that, I hate that, I've been a victim as well of male sexism.

So I believe Catherine1551 was overreacting, yeah is true there are some people that say sexist stuff here, there are also some people who say homophobic things, we have a lot of type of people with different personalities, different points of views, different problems and different forms of disorders, etc.

We should try to tolerate each other more, instead of going to censor a few people just because we didn't like something, or we misunderstood that person. I know is hard to do it when we are very sensitive, I am sensitive and a little thing might make me very upset sometimes, but I try to do my best to not fall into that and have an outburst which I had before and it's embarassing for me to remember. We need more tolerance and understanding, what she asked I don't think is possible anyway.

This is pretty common, I think. A matter of stating what IS
acceptable behaviour, but allowing the membership to help
enforce it.

Some things HAVE to be dealt with. For example, there are
posts which might bring the site into conflict with the law.
Additionally, there are ones which could be very damaging
to the site's purpose. Hell, even I2 deletes/moves stuff - just
with a much higher threshold.

It was a rhetorical question in response to the idea that members could regulate each others' behaviour on different threads. To a degree this is not a bad idea. Taken too far though, and it becomes mob rule.

Yes, as far as I am concerned, there should be no de facto rules - the posted rules should be stuck to. I also think that just about any time I have had disagreements with others on any of the threads, it has been over misognynistic comments.

Sorry to snip like that,
but what do you consider misogyny?
I am confused about that actually.

WP has already lived thru a period of overmoderation by PC fanatics. I don't think anyone wants that again.

This is the post PC era. It's just another weapon anyway, why pretend otherwise?
