Whatever happened to the PPR housecleaning that was promised in this thread?

I recently started reading a 17 page thread there because I couldn't understand why there was so much to say on the topic. What I found was a 17 page flame war. The OP would post something, other people would flame him, than he would flame them back. I like to think I killed that thread with this post. The OP hasn't posted in it since then, and since no one who agreed with his proposal ever supported him, there was no one to flame or counterflame. The point I made there would apply to most flame wars. The members here are not crazy or stupid, we are autistic, and I should think that most of us should appreciaite that.

But if you look at this post (and a few following), it would seem that many "PPR regulars" plan to continue to use it as a safe place to use their flamethrowers. If the plan to do something about is has been abandoned, shouldn't that be announced?

I am one of the people who admitted to finding the intensity level of PPR to be exciting. In fact, it is the first forum I check. However, like you, I do not care for potty mouth name calling and general meanness, and manage to refrain from it myself. As far as I have ever seen, the other members in the memoriam thread, who also stated they enjoy the spirited discussions, also are not offenders.

As it turns out, QM was not actually planning on a PPR purge. There were a couple posts between him and Lau when they used

to make their writing not be immediately visible. (Highlight the quote box to see it)

Notice that none of the "victims" of all of the flaming seem to be complaining, it's just how things go in PPR. Considering the often incendiary topics that are discussed there, things tend to get a bit heated and people have a go at each other from time to time, it just wouldn't be PPR without the occasional blowup. The "crackdown" went exactly nowhere because it was a stupid idea that essentially amounted to moderator ego stroking and had virtually no popular support, and it slunk away quietly in an attempt to save face. Just let it be, no one likes a snitch.

You know, I too wondered why that topic was so filled but didn't bother to look at all the threads being how it was too much to read..

Honestly I think somethings been wrong with the PPR forum for a while now, and that was the fact that no one could behave as they would while having a heated debate. Sometimes people get nasty, and that to me is cathartic. I rarely type posts that are longer than two sentences lately and I think that is because I don't feel the urge to complain and be argumentively verbose. So please, BRING IT ON!!

I am shocked and amazed that you would use me as an example here. Just flabbergasted. Completely dumbfounded. Agape. Aghast. Astonished even. One might even say bamboozled. Not to mention bewildered, blown away, and utterly breathless. More than a little dismayed, but really puzzled. The accusation leaves me speechless and startled.

i don't like the 'boys club' atmosphere in PPR, it feels like you're intruding in a locker room scene or something equally homosocial, plus it's just the same characters backslapping each other, so...

^Yeah, the atomosphere is a bit cliquey anymore. One reason I hardly post unless I'm not skipped....

I wouldn't say it's cliquey in there. We're completely open to new opinionated whack-jobs.

Not at all. New posters are accepted just fine. We have new faces coming in on a fairly regular basis. Depending on whether the new poster gets in an argument early on, sometimes they go through a "trial by flamewar" and may or may not get scared off, but I think most of the people I've seen come in and get in heated debates with old regulars tend to stick around rather than leave.

I lost heart in the decision, because it would be like mucking out the Augean Stables, only with no handy rivers nearby.

So Mr Hercules, what is your next great task after abandoning the stables?

I quite enjoy PPR as it is. I don't see why it should be regarded as a "mens club" though?

The only downside is that lots of the threads become a bit repetitive; there seems to be a lot of science vs religion threads, usually with religious beliefs getting a well deserved thrashing; so "believers" are entering a lions den and don't tend to survive long, with a few exceptions.

Perhaps I don't read the particular threads where there are flame wars. Not often I come across flaming. Either that or it goes over my head, I'm not easily offended by what I see or read.

I was not complaining, only inquiring, and thanks for the answer Quatermass, I will take that as the announcement I was suggesting.

It is really not my concern. I did not start this site with the intention of creating an autistic community where autistics could support each other and converse with people who's minds function simularly to their own, so if some of us go a little overboard in our obsessions others should understand rather than react the way an NT would.

I think Alex wrote somewhere (though I don't recall where) that we are the Voice of Autism, and noted the ratio of members to guests here at any given moment guessing that most of the guests are NT's trying to learn something about us, which I tend to agree with. If Alex is comfortable with what they are hearing, so am I.
