If you want it to be a title that encourages people to open up about their struggles, rather than just sharing their age, sex, and location, how about something like "New? Share your AS story here!" or something.

Good suggestions. I've stickied the thread. Any more suggestions for the final title name? Maybe leave this title issue open for 24 hours to give everyone chance to make suggestions and to let the members chose amongst themselves? Could always create a poll question after all the suggestions are in, or is that too over the top?

I don't care if you change the title, etc... My goal was to get all members to post and get to know each other beyond the arguing and banter. There are real people behind the usernames. I am up for whatever helps create a peaceful environment!

My only reservation about the phrase "meet and greet" is that some may think it is talking about real world meet-ups between members rather than a thread for new members to post to introduce themselves in the forum. Another suggestion:

5. New members welcome! Introduce yourself here.

If you want it to be more effective, allow each member to mention some of his struggles as an adult with autism and without shame. Gets the more intimidated autistic people more interested in participating when they can relate to each other more. Works wonders.

Yes, I tried to do this subtly. (ie. It's hard being on my own and I have anxiety). Those make my daily life a nightmare. I did find comfort that other people struggled with the anxiety as well.

So, if this is the case what is the solution? Suggestions anyone?

I keep making them, and people keep ignoring my posts. If you actually read them you will see i'm not backing all the people telling others to "suck it up".

IGNORE button topic

Nobody has to respond to anything anyone writes here at WP. Post it, but not all will come.

Internet posters are not your friends. They might even be bots. Take everything written with a grain of salt, sand, or what ever your favourite grit is. Even me. WP is a pleasant diversion, and I am very grateful it is here, as I remember a time when internet fora did not exist. Life is too precious to worry about trivia, so do not get excited about some person's Ayn Randy rant, or some dude who thinks Obama's membership in US politics is a long form discussion. :P

i do not really care. the "elite"group that is being talked about are just doing what comes naturally to them. they have the gift of social awareness and they use it.

i have no ability to talk with them because compared to them i am a dead tree stump in a forest of social fertility.
most frequent posters are out of my "social league". i am reinforced in my knowledge that my methods of communication are primitive and infertile to the minds of the socially aware.

this site is like what real life is like.

there is no chance to be acknowledged much unless you are in your 20's and pretty.

i am not in my 20's any more and i have not provided evidence that i am pretty, so i am mainly ignored.

i am not smart enough to talk in ppr i have been advised.

i am too old to buy into the 20 somethings flirt club(even though i would not have qualified for admission into it in my 20's anyway)

but i still keep posting.
i do not care whether popular people ignore me.
someday someone will fall from the lurking sky to say hello to me.

there are flirt threads and love threads and whatever that i would never post in, but this site accepts my posts so i will keep posting no matter what feedback i get.

popularity is something i see all around me every day of my life. i am sick of wondering why some people are popular and some are not. i do not care.

there are many active and invested people here trying to score some self confidence by commissioning positive assessments of their comments, but i give not a damn except for the topic title.

i think the site is going ok even though as usual i can not join in well. i am a slave to routine so the fact that i am not well liked here is a continuation of what i have experienced elsewhere, so it is no surprise or deterrent to me.

i will post until i have nothing else to say.

Speaking as one of the likely *offenders* referred to throughout this argument

Apart from one person who IS a serial mod whinger (yes ive used the word whinger a few times) and who is quite capable of character assassination or implying you're a liar with sometimes the next breath after PM'ing a mod (repeatedly, and i might add after sometimes altering his/her own posts to appear less attacking (interesting to watch him/her alter when he/she doesnt think you ever hit F5) and sometimes 4 or 5 times to give a final impression that he/she was being victimised or being misunderstood. Add to this the PM's you also get that run the same gamut, nice/irate/nice, sometimes while the aforementioned post changes are occuring) and then factor in that some of us have given the benefit of the doubt and been accepting of this person more than a few times, especially when the person first started posting, until some of us HAD to avoid including him/her to avoid unpleasantness, and i think that you're painting the problem sticker on the wrong people here), i think its very hard to demonstrate where anyone who has come amongst the more *regular* posters hasnt been welcomed and been given every opportunity to take part. I'll wager theres more evidence both overt AND implied that the person above has caused more upset than any of the *regular* posters combined and then multiplied at least twice.

And anyways, we dont dictate what others do, and to infer in some way we do is just madness or mispresentative of how i, and i assume others, view their place or identity at WP.

I don't even need to name the person referred to above, everyone who was in the supposed group knows and the pity is that the mods know as well, and we're getting censured? Add to that we've also show the same consideration in overlooking and trying to re-engage with a few other people who have displayed variable personalities (one nutty rampant christian who got suspended once only to reappear and start straight back up where he left off attacking people, and even then that person was afforded a fresh start from everyone in this "group"), and i think you're lowballing our ability and willingness to embrace others who perhaps lack our level of social interaction or comfort.

Well we can't type for them and help them out, we cant formulate thoughts on their behalf to fit in with a topic, and we cant create experiences for them if they dont happen to have one that is in context with what the current topic or mini topic of the thread is (i accept that changing from the original topic IS not ideal nor correct, but life happens). I only post in threads where i know going in what the topic is, and i know i can contribute in some way or add to the shared experience. And i am willing to adapt if things go tangental. No one forces me to stay if theres a sudden change, and ive yet to see anywhere where an earlier topic hasnt been revived with no blood spilt, and often to be engaged upon by others who missed it the first time round.

Just how responsible do you mods want to make us for others roadblocks in posting? Short of being a happy bunch who like to have a laugh and are totally open to anyone joining in, i dont see what we're expected to do....are we supposed to act like walmart greeters (do they still have those) and be plastic and give everyone the forum equivalent of a fake smile. Do i have to wear a vest?

All i have seen this conversation do is further marginalize people who interact better on here with others than they can in real life (personally im selectively mute in real life and couldnt have conversations even half as long with real folk as easily as on here), the ones who have found comfort and friendship have now been made to feel social lepers here as well. This whole saga has also left those of us who deal with depression in an even fouler mood than we ought to be. In the space of a week i have noticed people who would normally be upbeat and sociable become withdrawn.

Is that really the aim of WP?

This is the last post im making on the subject, its still a discussion post, because for me anything beyond this will be an argument, i really prefer no to get into those.

I am pretty sure that is me and my actions on the Stromfront Trolls thread. I had some serious issues when I first started on this forum but I think most of them are under control by now, especially with the redundancies and trying to tone down the attacks (I edited them because I felt sorry I did it; what does F5 do?).

EDIT: I am not sure what you mean by PM'ing mods though. I never did that until after the one thread I made.

A few frequent posters vs the thousands of new people who made their one post intro and pissed off again because they didn't like the environment here. I think I would cater to the lurkers as they ARE the majority. We want to retain them. Just because you have a louder [ whinier] voice than them doesn't mean you should be the most heard.

And you TEGH are example #1 of what I was talking about with the "it's their problem" mentality.

So what is it exactly that the chatty people are so upset about?

Is it that people are complaining to moderators without first taking it up with them? That I can understand.

Or

Is it that you are being asked to keep the chatty stuff in the half-a-dozen threads dedicated to it and not
A. Clog up the forum with it.
B. Derail serious threads with it.

If it's that, I can't see why there's such an issue, and all the hysteria over it is coming across as rather childish, to be frank.
This is an autism forum, and as such as designed to cater for people who are not likely to understand or be able to participate in random chat/flirting. If a good portion of the site (and yes, the Adult Autism Issues section does count as "a good portion") is taken over with it, then a sizable proportion of the site's members will feel alienated.

I support the idea of a forum dedicated to friendly banter, because I completely agree that people should be able to talk to their friends, but on the other hand, the less-socially-able majority should be able to start their own topics without them being derailed with dozens of pages of flirting. I saw in another thread that people were acting as though this were segregation and tantamount to rounding you up into concentration camps: seriously, grow up. This is not comparable to Nazism, and to try to compare it mocks the millions of people killed by the Nazi regime.

Saying that people should "suck it up and post" is just mean-spirited: this is an autism forum: you know, autism, that disorder that has a clinically significant impact on social and communicative skills?

Oh, and in answer to all the "But where will we go? What will we do?", well, if the half-dozen existing threads aren't good enough, then I'd suggest... oh, I don't know, the entire world? Normal socialisation seems to be based around random chat, banter and flirting.

In closing: I support the idea that people should be allowed to talk to their friends, but I think it's childish to have snarky little hissy fits all over the site just because you were asked not to clog up the entire place with it.

PM is the solution for it or MSN chat or yahoo chat or WP chat. Just create a private room and tell them the chat room name and invite them there.

I can tell you what's not the solution: Taking the piss out of the whole situation. All I see now are people making posts and adding in stabs about mods and being non "cliqueish" not to offend people, when it probably makes adult discussion even more intimidating than before.

I find it childish to be honest.
