I don't know if there is any way to improve this, but I do not consider WP to be a virus free site. I wouldn't come here without a strong firewall in place; I KNOW I've downloaded malicious things unawares while visiting this site, because I acquired those when this was the only internet site I had visited. Quite honestly, I think that this is going to be a problem with any large and public website that is monitored by volunteers, instead of a large paid staff. Members have to learn to protect themselves. I don't want to panic the members, but it is common sense (and that comes from someone with no technical computer savy, just lots of internet experience).

I agree.

For those who use Windows, an important first step would be to get rid of IE and use Firefox with Noscript. Even then, you may still pick up a few things. Spybot Search & Destroy can clean up malware pretty effectively.

Ummm...I didn't see an ad but I clicked into a thread and then an AntiVirus Webguard popped up and now I can't get rid of it.

I didn't download anything and if I clicked on it, I never saw that I was.

That happened to me the other day. I thought it was real (I know, I'm an idiot) so I did the virus scan, and then it told me to buy something, so I was like, "Jog on, I ain't buying anything!" and a bunch more messages keep coming up and it won't let me use the internet at all (I'm on a different computer right now). It's completely screwed, my mum's boyfriend is going to have to fix it again. :(
