yeah, it is annoying to have to close the ads.

That does not justify full page zwinky ads.

Justify? Why does Alex have to justify keeping WP up and running?
Goodness, what do you think this site is?
It depends on whether Alex is running this place or if he has sold partial interest to zwinky. The last three times I have logged on here and tried to get in any particular sub fora that POS zwinky ad has taken up the whole page and when I use the back arrow to get back to the discussion index I get the same zwinky ad. I have had to X that ad off my page and come back to Wrong Planet before I could view boards with that full page piece of junk in the way. No other forum that I go to has ever done that to my computer and a few of the other forums have ads so I doubt that it is an insurmountable problem if there is a willingness to fix it. I guess if Alex and the Mod Squad are okay with that obnoxious round about way of logging on here then people will just have get used to it.

Velodog, Alex has obviously sold an ad agency the right to place ads there. The agency has separately subcontracted which ads it places there, which explains why we wind up seeing ads that few aspies want to see.

If waiting for the link to bypass the ad to pop up is too onerous, then backarrow twice, forward-arrow once, then select to read messages again. No ad this time!

Or, of course, you could hit the lottery and give Alex a metric crapload of money to run the site, so he doesn't have to sell the ad space... :)

I hate the ads, too, and something in the new set up tends to keep WP from loading at all for me about half the time I try. Its really annoying. But, then, I remind myself that someone or something has to pay for this place and I can take on the expense or live with the ads and the freeze ups and whatever. I do wish we had SOME control over the ads, however, because some of them are downright funny if not sad given the mission of this place.

I have an idea, the ads should send some revenue to WP if we click on them, doesn't mean we have
to buy anything, but it will help pay the bills, I would take ad block off every few days and click ads

And therein lies the real problem. I don't think people mind ads, per se, its the type that is frustrating.

If you spend some tme googling composit bins and methods, you might be able to get a compost ad to show up instead. Something in the ad selection program has done that for me. I don't mind the grenn compost ads at all, and they've been living on my WP pages for days now. I've clicked a few times because we are seriously considering buying a compost bin.

Oh! That would explain why I started seeing ads for Timberland hiking shoes after weeks of ads for zwinky and imvu...

... now I wanna see if I can get ads for food to show up

Wait.. I thought that the ad content was based on keywords on the site.. not on your own computer.

I suppose it's a moot point if alex isn't going to bother, but can specific types of ads that people DO want to see be specified? Like if lots of people on the site said that they WOULD be interested in ads for certain types of things, might it be possible to actually get ads that might not only be less annoying, but might actually be effective advertisement as well?
Things like technology sites, maybe?
Lately I've been visiting lots of sewing/craft/fabric sites.. and I know there are at least a few other sewers on WP..
I suppose it would have to be a completely different advertisement system to do that, though, huh?

Perhaps this is how we could actually controlwhat ads show on what threads! If we start on each Discussion section and start threads with names like 'hiking boots' or 'Christmas Baking' or 'Transendental Medication' we can actually be able to change what was routinely placed in that section.

we could try to change this very thread we are in!! ! :D

So, yeah, DW, how about those compost piles! If it grows, it goes! But smaller pieces, please and no peach or plum pits. :D

ARE the ads in the science & tech section relevant to what people would be looking for?

I know I posted about gingerbread cookies and pumpkin pie in the art section..

So far as putting stuff in that's not related, though, is that allowed? Like if I write a post somewhere in the general forum that's a response to what someone else said, but start off the post talking about the wonderful supprise I got at joann fabrics yesterday when the red-tag fabric that was labeled $3/yard turned out to be $1/yard and I hadda go searching for others that might have that same discount? And I did find a bit more, too! The sales girl was like 8O (I think maybe she thought I was a lil' crazy, especially since I don't have a serger--I'll have to get one of those eventually, lol--but I doubt that people who work at fabric stores can really laugh at other people compulsively buying cheap fabric anyway) So that I ended up getting more than twelve yards of knit fabric that I can use to add sleeves to shirts that don't have sleeves or the sleeves are too short, and got it all for CHEAPCHEAPCHEAP! Plus two yards of sweatshirt material for half off and two yards of this beautiful black brocade for 60% off.. And I've got some eyelets and stuff coming, I'm planning on trying to make a corset top.. or maybe use it for a bodice for a renaissance-type dress. But since I only got two yards of it (I didn't want to spend THAT much..) it couldn't be the whole overdress, so probably I'll make more of a modern-day corset-top.
That would get kinda confusing, wouldn't it?

Are signatures counted in what triggers ads? Like, should I change my sig to something that might trigger better ads, and move the stuff I have in my sig now to somewhere else in my profile? Does anything on the page trigger ads, or just certain sections? And in terms of coding, are the signatures part of the main body? (Okay, I'll have to just check the source code and figure that out for myself, huh? But maybe somebody else already has.. LOL)
(Should I go post that whole middle bit in the art category? And perhaps put a bit in my sig about sewing discussion located in the art category so that other people know and I"m not just talking to myself? Or in the Women's Discussion section? Or both? Lol, I know I can't double post between forums, but it's for the very good cause of getting the Google ads to start triggering fabric sites that I might find interesting. I'd even turn off my AdBlock for that! And WHY does firefox think that "Women's" is not a word? It still want to change it to "Womenfolk's")

are you serious, or is that a joke? (I am bad at telling if something is humor)

anyway, looking at the number of threads and posts about this topic of the ads, and the number of people complaining, and people giving ideas, etc, I think a large number of members here would like your input/reply on the subject!

Seriously, there has been alot of great sugestions on how to raise money for the site. Are we just going to continue to see a ever increasing number of ads, to the point that no one comes here anymore? Are there other things your doing, working on and the adverts are just temporary, or do we just have to live with it?

It is your site, so I respect the decisions you make, but I cant stand that adverts, and cant get them to load half the time, so will simply be going some place else if I have to deal with them

Is that a joke?

And if it isn't what does it actually mean that WP has been bought by Zwinky?

That donations ( of any kind ) are no longer appropriate because the money will all be going to Zwinky?

Or that donations are no longer appropriate because they will go to someone, ( you ), who no longer has any WP running costs to pay for?

As someone who has donated $100 to your merchant a/c over this last year I would like to know what the situation is exactly, so that I know whether to donate again.

And a clarification would also be very welcome so that I know whether I should immediately stop explaining to people that they can donate small and/or one-off amounts to you, to help WP, ( by using the Pay Pal a/c Send Money function ). Because if WP is now owned by Zwinky any donations will simply disappear into their pockets or your own and have no impact on WP at all.

.
