I like locked threads better than deleted ones especially if a moderator posts why the topic was locked. Deleting a thread is just sneaky. No one knows where it went or why it's gone and it gives the impression that people are hiding things instead of just stating why the thread was inappropriate.

I've locked topics when there is a lot good discussion in them but the topic has started to go awry, and splitting it would be time consuming. I always post my reasoning if I lock.

Threads that are 95% junk simply get removed.

If I move a topic from one forum to another, I like to leave a shadow so that the posters know where it is gone. Most mods don't do that because it is assumed most people access their threads in a different way, but I go in by forum, so it seems important to me. If I'm removing because its junk then I won't leave that shadow.

the rules state that locked or deleted threads aren't to be discussed.

a note can be placed at the bottom of a locked thread as to why it was locked, but on a thread that was removed, there is no 'there' there to explain why.

So a thread of posts saying why topics were removed would violate that rule (and be a pain in the patootie to keep organized and current not to mention a place where others would want to argue their points and counter points for not removing . . .argh!)

anyway, that's how it works :D

I don't think anyone suggested that moderators should post why they deleted a thread when they do so. Just a preference for locking rather than deleting, along with the desire for some kind of information posted as to why.
