If it stops them from getting themselves banned over a flame war, I think it is beneficial. ;)
To a point - but it's not as beneficial as dealing with a problem like adults.

Depends how intractable the problem is.

An argument on the internet is not intractable so long as one of the parties isn't a f*****g goon ret*d

Yeah. But it is not that hard to solve a problem. Especially one such as an internet argument...

I think you may have stepped into a temporal anomaly for a moment there

i can only say [as one who would likely be ignored as an old fart with nothing popular to offer anybody] that the most compassionate [for all sides] option would be for just the moderators to have the power to enable the ignore function for selected WP members victimized by other hostile WP members in terms of the victims being the recipient of bile-filled-but-just-permissible attack posts. all involved parties would have to be made aware of this state of affairs, and there would have to be 2 warnings before the ignore function is enabled for the victim. this would be an intermediate step just before a suspension. as for other members who are not one's cup of tea but have done nothing illegal of hostile, IMHO a blanket ignore option is akin to throwing out the baby with the bath water, in that even in folks i would rather ignore 99% of the time, even they are occasionally spot-on informative about something or another, just as a busted analog clock is right twice daily. an intermediate option would be to have the objectionable comments "collapsed by the community" [or maybe put into red ink so other readers will notice something is amiss] like what MSN does on its comments pages. my personal preference is that in PP&R the blanket ignore may be universally enabled, which i suppose would be the forum equivalent of repealing the broadcast fairness doctrine, turning PP&R into something like AM/FM radio
just a suggestion.

WP already has an "ignore" function:
http://www.wrongplanet.net/modules.php? ... ile=ignore

P.S. It doesn't actually work, though.

Here, Allow me to make this PERFECTLY CLEAR:

PHP-Nuke uses a BBToNuke forum interface which is derived from phpbb. Its actually completely remoddeled to fit in with the CMS itself.

The BBToNuke version is 2.0._... And I know this because I have used Nuke in the past.

It doesn't work because their posts will still appear except for when you reply and see all the previous replies as you are replying, their post won't be there as you are replying but you will still be able to see it when you are view the forum and threads.

The posts disappear once you hit reply but you can see them before hitting it.
I guess its a way of making sure you cant remember what they wrote unless you hit quote

i will be thankful just for the immediate [primary post] blocking of one particular member that i can't handle seeing right now. :)

in any case it accomplishes the main goal of making it harder to see the obnoxious words of a particular person.
