Waiting for new WP doesn't seem very productive... why not add new rule right now? These are 6 years old! http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt12459.html

Mods should promote it in front of Alex and tomorrow all users could get PM about new quoting rule. And we start to tip this posts to mods and warn users about it.
alex is not seeking input into rule changes. he is a very busy person, so i make darn sure that whatever i DO propose to him regarding the site is of utmost importance.

Look, I respect this point - However, a slight edit would be warranted by this point. 6 Years is a long time.

Also, Please, Calm down a bit... We aren't trying to murder you cruelly, We are only making suggestions.

if you are reading anything agitated in my response it only exists in your imagination. i tend to be extremely calm, even to the point that it actually annoys people. :)

feel free to make suggestions to alex about rule changes, but it would be folly for moderators to start championing that cause considering there are more pressing matters on the site.

My appologies - Just by the post it seemed like it.

Well, Can someone suggest to him that he implement a nice bit of Javascript to make them 2 quotes long at max, No matter how many are quoted.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... asemonkey/

Feel free to implement that on your own. With all the other legitimate issues WP has, asking Alex to tackle this instead of those other issues is counterproductive. Nested quotes may be annoying - but that's all they are.

Is there not a new version of WP on its way?

I've never written a greasemonkey script before, but okay.

Code:
// ==UserScript==
// @name        quotetrim
// @namespace   wrongplanet
// @include     http://www.wrongplanet.net/*
// @version     1
// ==/UserScript==

MAX_DEPTH = 2;

quotes = document.getElementsByClassName("quote");
for(i in quotes)
{
   j = 0;
   pn = quotes[i].parentNode;
   while(pn !== undefined && pn.nodeName.match(/TD|TR|TBODY|TABLE/))
   {
      if(pn.className == "quote" && ++j >= MAX_DEPTH)
      {
         quotes[i].parentNode.parentNode.parentNode.setAttribute("style", "display:none");
         break;
      }
      pn = pn.parentNode;
   }
}

If he is busy ok. But then why even bother him?
We are the users and mods, this site is about us for us. So lets define the quoting rule and start to obey it.
And what are the more pressing matters?

There are no rules when it comes to quotes. Some people may find x or y thing annoying but theres no agreement on what should be allowed and what shouldnt.

In order to agree to a certain set of rules we´d have to approach every member about it and then take into account their suggestion/look at the results.

As you may understand this process would be extremely time consuming and is not going to be carried out anytime soon.

8O To create such a poll takes... 10 seconds? To vote is a right, not an obligation (except you live in a dictatorship) so I do not understand why to approach "every member". Plus I am sure mods have an option to send administrative PMs to all members at once, so no promblem in here. Just lack of will

EDIT: better idea. why don't you create a poll? it would not be binding, but you could at least hear from multiple members.

no, we don't have that option. it's pretty lame to imply to there is a lack of will when in fact we do not have the tools.

Ok, I can write it (but someone needs to correct my grammar).
And some mod needs to publish it. Because I am not popular here and people would vote based on my personal charm, not the real concern :wink:

We arent talking about a pool

If we did it with a pool as you state members would complain that most of them dont visit this section(which is where said poll would happen)

As stated previously we´d have to approach every member personally and thats currently not doable.
Maybe some time in the near future one of us´ll have a lot of free time and start approaching over 700000 members.
As you may understand its not our main concern right now because its not something that we can do anything about.

First there would be a discussion about the WP netiquette - after that the poll. And I see no reason why there shouln't be a highlighted announcement thread in every sector of WP.

70000 registered. But most of them are inactive. Have no idea how many active contributors are there, would guess 4-5000 at most. And I know for sure even phpbb2 has an option for sending mass pms/emails. If you don't have this privilege, some mod has it ( I hope). And Alex has it for sure (yeah I know I know he is so busy he basically abandoned us...)

I understand. I have read already that there are much pressing issues. Never got an answer what these are...
Anyway new WP is coming soon. Maybe this decade even... :P So we should be ready and prepare new set of rules in advance to make it just perfect. Not so?
