The similar topics threads are always from four and five years ago for me, so I can see why someone would post in a dead topic if they don't check the date.

The only annoying thing I find about old threads being bumped is I post a reply, then find that I have already posted exactly the same thing earlier in the thread about 3 years ago, only it's worded slightly differently but still the same thing.

I have this problem too. An old thread gets bumped, and it's been so long since I took part in it, that I've completely forgotten I already answered, contributed, etc. That can start to look really weird and repetitive.....

Like: Jan 16 2013: "Yes I get overwhelmed the most by noisy crowds but also a cat meowing"..........
March 3 2015: Yes noisy crowds bother me, but also when a cat meows a lot....."
Oops. Yeah Bird you already said that two years ago...It does kind of freak me out. If the thread is ten pages long I don't usually look through every page to see if I've already discussed things.

I like many of the old threads.

I try not to bump threads, but sometimes I post in bumped threads. I'm trying not to do that too much either, because I know it's often frowned upon.

Not all bumps are created equal. If a thread from a few years back is asking for advice, it doesn't make sense to post in it offering the OP advice, because they have most likely already moved on. But if a thread is just people sharing their experiences with a certain subject, it might still be relevant.

I, personally, LOVE the "Similar Topics" thing--it allows me to find fascinating old topics to read.

I don't see why people need to search for related topics before they post. After all, we're not supposed to post in threads that are a few years old anyway, and if a new thread is started then people get to share their experiences and thoughts about that subject, which otherwise they wouldn't be able to.

If bumping is a real problem, maybe threads could be locked once they haven't been posted in for a certain amount of time.
